What´s new in Solaris 10 5/09?

A new update release of Solaris 10 is available for download. With update 5/09 (aka Update 7) the following new feature are available in Solaris 10. This artcle is based on "Solaris 10 5/09 - What's New?" document:

System Resources Enhancement

Support Added for Using ZFS Clones When Cloning a Zone
zoneadm attach -b Option
you can back out certain patches from update on attach

SMF Services for IPsec
IPsec is now managed by SMF services

Security Enhancement

NAT-Traversal for IPsec Key Management Developers
Stronger Algorithms for IPsec
Three larger Diffie-Hellman integer-modulus groups (2048-bit, 3072-bit, and 4096-bit) as well as SHA2 including sha256, sha384, and sha512? SHA-2 using HMAC.

Hmm, all in all not very interesting release, imo. I'm looking more optimistic at the OpenSolaris 2009.06 release

Always look forward to updates of Solaris 10. Stable, reliable and manageable for our ultra24 boxes in the office.Let's hope it stays like this under Oracle.

If you happen to have a Nehalem based system you will find it a very interesting release indeed

It's also a more convenient way to get your system updated to the latest patch levels, especially if you use Live Upgrade. And for users of zones, zone clone using ZFS cloning can help you save a lot of time and storage. Perhaps not the headline grabbing items like ZFS root, but still a worthwhile release. I wouldn't recommend accelerated qualification processes like I did for 11/07 (u4) and 10/08 (u6), but it still has some features worthy of note.

The Question is. What's new that doesn't come in Patch form

Nehlam staff etc is Kernel so thats gonne be a patch.
Zoneadm normaly are patches too.
Well we see when the patches are out

What happened with crossbow implementation in Enterprise Solaris I was hopping it will get back ported

Crossbow was integrated into Opensolaris a few builds ago. Features don´t find their way into Solaris 10 that fast, especially when it alters such an important part of the system. One of the key differences of Solaris 10 to Opensolaris is it focus to risk mitigation when integrating new features.

I'd disagree as they started Crossbow work last year around this time and introduced Bug 6696124, which has yet to be fixed AFAIK.

Annoying: A fresh install of Solaris 10 u7 still requires 15 patches. The biggest: StarOffice update 12. This shld have been updated.

That´s a consequence of the release process. The testing and Q&A takes some time. This testing has to be done on a fixed version. You don´t change it while testing, to be sure that an introduced patch don´t break something you´ve already tested.

As the world don´t stop turning in the mean time, it may be possible that there are a number of new patches in the mean time.

At this point you have to make a decision: A rigorously tested version or a rigorously tested version with last minute bug-fixes that wasn´t part of the Update release process.

Official support for ZFS clones when cloning zones makes this a must-have upgrade for me. There are hacks to get around this on 10/08 or earlier but nothing beats the automatic goodness that was previously only available in OpenSolaris...

This was a deliberate alteration to the Solaris 10 implementation of zpool version 10 - see here:

Yes, the L2ARC is there, but you can´t activate it. That´s the reason why it´s version 10 but without L2ARC.

The zoneadm clone feature seems breaking the Live upgrade. I mean if you create a new zone using the zoneadm clone (zfs clone), then try to create an Alt_be, after activate and switch to alt_be, the original_be will not be able to mounted/activated again; the error is about the zone you used in the "zoneadm clone" command (as the clone source). Will open a case at sun to see if it is a bug?
