I can't blame Gosling for getting sentimental, and mourning the end of Sun's independence. For him in particular, it was a good ride, and his baby Java was one of the major contributors to Sun's reputation.
I'm glad to read that you're optimistic, but corporate mergers are notorious for clashes of culture, which in some cases have made the merger unsuccessful. And most of the time, it's the bought-out company that loses out (can you think of any examples of Sun's acquisitions, StorageTek and MySQL and all the rest, that changed the culture of Sun, rather than the other way around? None that I can remember). Frankly, I think that the encounter between laid-back, pony-tailed, research-great-stuff-even-if-it-doesn't-make-much-money Sun and more formal suit-and-tie bottom-line-oriented Oracle will be one of the greatest challenges. At the beginning of your post, I thought that "ideas are mergerproof" would refer to something far more concrete, like Java, which really is likely to survive the acquisition more or less intact. If I had to pick one thing about Sun most likely to continue essentially unchanged, that would be it. But as you know, it's not for me to say any more. Best of luck to you all, and I hope that your guess about the corporate culture will be more right than mine.
Sun ist tot. Es lebe Sun!
Und man kann nur hoffen, dass der clash of cultures ein gutes Ende nimmt, aber was man so hört hat Larry recht genaue Vorstellungen von seinem Unternehmen....
Great post. With employees like you Sun should have remained independent, but what's done is done - your optimism and love for the company you work for is both enviable and to be applauded!
""V for Vendetta" - "Ideas are mergerproof"."
Wow. I've written some hard stuff in my time, but that right up there, that's actually severely insulting. I'm the "V" in Vendetta (I've actually been called that more than once), and I can tell you from experience, that IDEAS ARE NOT MERGEPROOF. All it takes is one stinking manager thinking of his own rear and and saying: "I don't see it that way." And that's it. Game over. The jig is up. If I had a euro for every time I've been told that to my face, or seen that happen to others, I'd be even richer than I already am.
Sorry ... i don't think that you got the point of my blog article.
Are you sure?
You were trying to say that you're really, really dissapointed that Gosling is implying that Sun is dying with the Oracle merger. I got that. My beef is with Gosling's thought (and Gosling himself) that ideas are mergeproof; I find that kind of "punditism" extremely insulting. You seem to be optimistic that it'll actually happen. You're very optimistic. All I'm saying from experience is that the exact opposite happens. Notions of Sun dying (or not dying) aside. One thing that will get the shaft, and hard and deep, from all of this, will be Solaris, as I've written earlier. That is of course, unless uncle Larry's stated strategy doesn't change, and if he proceeds as he stated he would. So in that sense, that part of Sun's effort will die. |
