Reuters is not know as a bullshit teller.
http://www.reuters.com/article/idINN2029606720090320 Best technologie and a bad marketing is not the best mix if you need money.
(sigh)...all these internet clairvoyants, so sure to spout "facts" with zero proof, short of rumours.
Why do you persist in calling this a rumor when you certainly know it isn't?! A rumor of a merger lasts for a few hours before one party or the other denies the rumor since stock prices are being effected. It's been days now and with no comment from either company so that should tell you something.
You'll also notice that Jonathan updated his blog @ 10:54PM Mar 18, 2009 WITHOUT comment!!! Also the same information of 6.5 to 8 billion has been published almost everywhere. So they are in talks it's just a matter of what will come of it. If you are sure this is a rumor then you must be shorting Sun (JAVA) as it will certainly fall when the "rumor" of a purchase is proved wrong.
Let me break this down for you:
"rumor |ˈroōmər| ( Brit. rumour) noun a currently circulating story or report of uncertain or doubtful truth"
``noun a currently circulating story or report of uncertain or doubtful truth" ``
And to think that after three days the report if of "doubtful truth" is silly. There are talks going on. Now it might be that they go nowhere but the fact that the price of Sun's shares are above $8 after three days shows this is for real. And the idea that Jonathan can't comment on this is only true if they are indeed in talks.
As i wrote at an other location. Jonathan can´t comment this rumour. At first there is a clear policy .. "No comments about market rumours" and when Jonathan starts to comment one rumour, he can comment every rumour in the future as not commenting it, would give other rumours in the future more creditibility just by simply not commenting it ... the policy has it sense ....
Sun has not invested in Linux ?
Well Sun has constributed more then anybody else to Linux. But that does not mean, that Sun is really interested in pushing Linux, but the technology that has been absorbed from Linux. To all the roumors guessing ? I don't care by now. I/you can't change it. The world will not stand still if the one thing hapens or the other. Let's go for business and technology ! Everything else is just wasted time and energy
Kristan, don´t mix the Linux Kernel and all the free Software surrounding a kernel in a Linux distribution. We are not really invested in Linux Kernel development.
Well,
Are you trying to say that Reuters is the source of rumours ? http://www.reuters.com/article/businessNews/idUSBNG47936420090320 HeatPhlux
Writing bold statements about the future of Sun and to knock at the same time on HP's, Dell's and IBM's door, just doesn't seem right.
I don't believe, the timing between Jonathan's blog series and selling Sun is a coincidence. IF IBM really wants to buy Sun, I believe we will hear from other bidders as well soon.
Rumors spread like wild fires. Does the original rumor starter know for sure that IBM is wanting to buy Sun, and not like some kind of partnership? Some people have said that Sun+IBM have met several times recently, but that doesnt mean they were interested in purchasing Sun. Maybe Sun just wants to sell parts of its business.
I sure do hope though that Sun and IBM both take a look at this very closely. It has a lot of consequences. I know a lot of Sun folks who wouldnt like this and are not very happy that they could likely be laid off.
Parts of SUN? What will be left? An house in Silicon Valley with a chair and the CEO on top?
What shoud SUN sell if SUN wants to stay alive? There is nothing what you can sell and what brings money in. If you sell java, you will be dead. If you sell "rock", you will be dead, if you sell Star Office - you need money to finde someone who need this, you have to pay him for sell. Sell storaktek ? Haha. There is nothing left what you can sell without you own death. If you see the shrink of sun it is no wonder. They cut the flesh from the bones and whats left?
Joerg : Sun did not invest in Linux ? Are you kidding ? Sun is #1 contributors in terms of line of code in any Linux distribution.

linux is just the kernel, despite of the meme floating around. the rest is oss. obviously we are invested in oss but not in linux kernel. okay indirectly we are invested. weshould to spread the oss=linux meme ourself
