Maybe they dont really want any synergy effects, but just buy and later close a bothersome competitor
But it would be a little bit expensive ...
The SPARC and Solaris market is to large to let it dry down ... there is money to make .... i assume there is someone who wants to sell his SUNW stocks and make a better price with it by this rumour
Maybe they'll adopt the DEC Alpha / Intel "solution":
Sparc emulation on PowerPC. Btw. was DEC smaller / bigger than Sun nowadays ? On the first view I see a lot of similarities, like own Risc CPU plus own Unix OS, but maybe I am dead wrong cheers Alex
They must love the whole ball and chain thing. Way to go in a recession!
No comment to this. In recent months, Sun has approached a number of large tech companies in the hopes of being acquired, said people familiar with the matter. The world's largest tech company, Hewlett-Packard Co., declined the offer, said a person briefed on the matter. A spokesman for Dell Inc., the world's third-largest server maker, declined to comment.
Thanks for the perspective Joerg - I always feel better reading your and BMSeer's blogs
Sun is good for IBM for 3 reasons:
1) HUGE IP portfolio 2) HUGE IP portfolio 3) Did I mention the IP portfolio? With Linux so dominant I can't see regulators complaining about the merger. The tape issue isn't huge either - Hitachi make tape too. I think it will go ahead for $10 a share. There are just too many investors (South Eastern and KKR) who would like to cash in and apply the money to something else in this down market. Just my 2c
Thats no rumors.
Nun ...
As I mentioned in my blog article, this part of the news is interesting:
In recent months, Sun has approached a number of large tech companies in the hopes of being acquired, say people familiar with the matter. The world’s largest tech company, Hewlett-Packard, declined the offer, says a person briefed on the matter. A spokesman for Dell Inc., the world’s third-largest server maker, declined to comment. --> http://blog.dogan.ch/2009/03/18/ubernimmt-ibm-sun/ It looks like, that Sun asked IBM. This slightly different than the rumors we had in the past. In my opinion, Sun and IBM do not match together. Both are competitors and both have many similar products. That would mean, that many products would have to disappear after a merge. It would make more sense, if Fujitsu would by Sun. Both companies could benefit from each others experience.
What´s strange at the report: They asked Dell, who declined, but they didn´t asked HP with their informations in background. But the combination of both in the same paragraph move both information fragments into the same group of validity. The first one is still just a rumour .... not commented by HP. That´s an interesting choice of words ...
Tru64, NSK, OpenVMS vs. HP-UX. MIPS, Alpha vs. PA-RISC. Und? Hat es einen bei HP interessiert? Nö. Also an einem so oft genannten Gerücht muss was Wahres dran sein.
So, if they did buy them.. What on earth would happen to all the delicious, moist and tasty open source software Sun maintains, provides, and installs? Would it just end up in IBM's basement and be entrusted to hobbyists? (yeah, because the hobbyists are gonna care about Solaris when they have their beloved Linux, nevermind ZFS and the crappiness of ext's..) I would be all for it if IBM would, say, GPL AIX and start sharing and caring between the two code bases, but I really can't see that happening. And it's not like IBM is gonna maintain two competing UNIX operating systems.
Ahem, IBM would probably assimilate and rename some of the open source software, if not all. However, they've been particularly open to open source development.
One needs to remember that they are so large that they have internal competition as well as external; from the outside looking in, this has worked well for them. DSL
There are nothing from ibm.
- why should IBM not say "Hey, what shoud WE do with SUN. Its not our target". There is no reason about this. There are nothing fom your leader. I guess your companiehead does not know how bad this rumors are for the hole company, specialy if i like to make a cut of 6000. Thats bad guys, that realy bad. If this is true and this deal will not completed, it will be a absolut sundowner. Why should you like to work for a company where the CEO goes to some other companys with the hope that they will buy SUN? Thats bad.
There is a reason for silence.
There are two possibilities. 1. The rumors are true. 2. The rumors are false Now if the rumors are false and someone who can speak officially comes out and debunks them, that sets a precedent. If in the future it turns out that we are in some kind of talks and they remain silent, then something can be read in to that. Now if the rumors are true, then obviously there will be regulatory reasons why we have silence. Either way, until there is something to actually say, don't expect anything apart from What Scott responded with email to one reporter. That is along the lines of 'IT is Sun's policy to nor comment on rumors no matter how ridiculous or how true they may be' - sorry I can't recall the exact quote but that is close. Alan. |
