You donīt see the name everywhere ... AFAIK you donīt see it in the ifconfig output ...
the name is visible also in ifconfig (and other tools):
# ip link set dev eth0 name internet0 # ifconfig internet0 internet0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:15:F2:3C:6B:A1
If that's supposed to be an example for Linux you probably mean nameif (which renames interfaces based on the mac address).
