Ich hatte heute im Büro eine Erleuchtung: Ich glaube wirklich das Guttenberg sieben Jahre in muehevoller Kleinarbeit an seiner Promotionsschrift gearbeitet hat. Nur dann hat er sich wahrscheinlich gesagt "Verdammt, was habe ich denn da für nen Mist geschrieben?", hat den Mist geloesch und hat dann auf die Schnelle die Promotionsschrift zusammenkopiert, über die heute diskuttiert wird. Dazu würde auch passen, das ein Kommentator der Zeit das Thema der Promotion für eine Dr.-Arbeit für viel zu ambitioniert hält.

When you look at your mobile, you may see it as a useful tool. It enables you to communicate at any time at any place. However due to the technical needs of mobile communication, it's a tracking device, too. A tracking device that is carried by millions of people alone in Germany.

The german politician Malte Spitz extracted the connection data collected by his mobile phone carrier by going to a court and gave this data to the respected german newspaper Zeit (to be exact, the online department). The result shows, how dangerous these tracking devices are.

However most people need those tracking devices for telecommunication. However we can't allow governments to have such data. When we allow the governments to force mobile providers to store this data for half a year as planed, we allow them track all our movements of the last six month. This would be the death of freedom, the death of privacy. We can't allow goverments to force us to choose between communication and privacy.

There is no better demonstration that laws for a telecommunication data retention without reasonable suspicion are one of the most urgent dangers for freedom.

Quite a while ago, Brendan Gregg wrote about a book about DTrace. It looks that he and Jim Mauro completed their work and it appears as it's near to going to print. In DTrace book sample chapter: File Systems he offers a the table of content and the chapter about filesystems as a teaser.

Approach to FRA on Wednesday. The interactions of sunlight and the clouds were incredible beautiful. And then i made a decision. I need a new camera. Yes ... i have one ... my Nikon D90 and i have already invested a lot of money on it. However in the recent years it was more and more obvious to me that this large camera is keeping me from taking photos. Just out of a single reason: Because it's at home.

I was thinking about a small camera for a while now. However the next thought was "No, you have already an excellent one". I was really disappointed about having no camera with me while sitting in the aircraft looking out of the window at the awesome "scenery". So I made a quick decision: I went into the Miles&More shop at FRA and purchased a new camera with my miles - so no real money changed its owner. I know it's not the best use of airline miles, however such emotional, ad-hoc decisions are never wise.

That said, i'm know a proud owner of a Panasonic Lumic DMC-TZ10. Really nice camera i was looking at for a while now. And this photo is the first shoot with it:

I made this picture while sitting in the FTL lounge of Lufthansa in Frankfurt to test the tele-end of the camera. The light at the top of the photo is the light of the room reflected by the window in front of me.

Many people know how to kill a process, but less people know that you can suspend a running process in to resume the execution later.

The test case

I wrote a small script to demonstrate both commands.

It just prints the current time every 2 seconds.

You may have recognized that there is a 31 second gap between 1297973827 and 1297973858 for script that should print out the timestamps continiously every two seconds.

What happened here? At 1297973827 i ran the following command:

When you look at the process flags, you will see that the process has been stopped:

Then i just waited for half a minute and resumed execution with

So the perl scripted resumed to print the timestamps at 1297973858. When you check the pflags again you will see, that the the STOPPED and ISTOP flags went away:
