There is an old saying "The journey is the reward". The journey of Christoph Rehage is such a journey. He started to walk from China to Germany. Albeit he didn´t walked the whole way, he walked 4646 km though China. The documented this distance in a really interesting video and an even more interesting blog:

Alive prefered. As my blog and the activities around it are my business card, it´s just logical to use it for this step and this solves a problem, as my internal network is smaller than my outside one and vastly more people know c0t0d0s0.org than Joerg Moellenkamp. I was asked about this step by several people, but those people couldn´t help me here.
PS: I won´t explain the sense of this posting to the outside of Sun, the intended audience inside of Sun already know what it means.
I´ve searched for some financial data in the peer group of Sun to compare how Sun has done in the last reported quarter. After doing this i think i should i should add some perspective to the revenue numbers.
At the end the revenue decline looks pretty much similar in the peer group of Sun. Some of our peers experienced a larger decrease of revenue than Sun, some experienced a smaller decrease.
Revenues for the third quarter of fiscal 2009 were $2.614 billion, as compared with $3.266 billion for the third quarter of fiscal 2008, and compared with $3.220 billion for the second quarter of fiscal 2009. Total gross margin as a percent of revenues was 42.7, a decrease of 2.2 percentage points as compared with the third quarter of fiscal 2008 and an increase of 0.8 percentage points as compared with the second quarter of fiscal 2009.
and
Net loss for the third quarter of fiscal 2009 on a GAAP basis was $201 million, or $(0.27) per share on a diluted basis, as compared with a net loss of $34 million, or $(0.04) per share, for the third quarter of fiscal 2008, and compared with a net loss of $209 million, or $(0.28) per share, for the second quarter of fiscal 2009. GAAP net loss per share includes a restructuring charge of $46 million primarily related to the restructuring announcement of November 2008.
There is a new version of the OS ... sorry ... the Firmware of the Sun Storage 7000. Several new features were integrated into the system like Microsoft shadow copy for shared folders (you can see the contents of snapshots via "Previous Version" of the folders), AD cross-forest authentication and workflow automation. You will find the release notes at wikis.sun.com.
Automated ZFS snapshots (the foundation of the Timeslider) are a feature integrated into OpenSolaris a while ago. Glen Brunette developed the glue to combine the Amazon S3 cloud storage , encryption and the automated ZFS snapshots to provide a really neat way to backup your system. You will find the information about this at kenai.com, a Sun website for developers. With this method, it will be easy (hey, it´s 0.1 ... but works really good at the moment) easy to have an automated backup at an offsite location. There aren´t any valid excuses.
PS: Glenn, my feedback: Really great stuff. But i want a GUI a simple as the GUI controlling timeslider
Juni 2009 in Stuttgart vertreten.
We celebrating the 5th birthday of b.s.c today There are hopefully several additional years of blogging in front of it, independent from the second level domain it will use in the future
