So, Sun made an big announcement today: You can download almost any software from Sun for free. So you can try out the stuff, develop for it or do some experiments with it without the hassles of expiring demo licenses or the need to buy some licenses. You only have to pay in the case you want support (for example for going to production). You can even use it in your production system without paying for it, but this would be something for the die-hard-administrators, because you get only the bytes and support from the community.
With this step you can use the commercial-grade software from some like the components you find in a linux distribution. (When you find them in Linux e.g. there is no cluster framework equivalent to SunCluster in the linux world.) Use them, try them, and when you are ready for prime time with your service, buy it. I think it´s a very important and very good step in the war for developers and mindshare. Or to cite Paul Murphy:

Ultimately the contest between IBM's Cell, Sun's CMT, and Microsoft's traditional PPC will come down to developer and customer loyalties -and in that battle it doesn't get gutsier than this.

Vielleicht könnte man jetzt mal ein echtes Problem lösen: Die Rolle, die sich die Bildzeitung selbst zuweist und ihr von der herrschenden Klasse zugewiesen wird.

Auch wenn man in der Werbung ein interessantes Bild des vielfältig kulturell interessierten, das Internet nutzenden Menschen zeichnet, der sich über vielerlei interessante Dinge informiert, so muss man den Wahrheiten in Auge gucken: Das Internet wird immer noch zumeist dafür benutzt um sich wenig bekleidete Mitmenschen in eindeutigen Posen und Situationen zu betrachten. Dieser Umstand hat zu der Entwicklung eines weit verbreiteten Typus des Internetnutzers geführt: Der Einhandsurfer und zunehmend auch die Einhandsurferin. Ein Mensch mit dieser Fähigkeit vermag es sich in hoher Geschwindigkeit durch das Internet zu bewegen, die andere Hand, nunja, die ist woanders und ist mit ganz und gar natuerlichen und technologiefremden Dingen beschäftigt.
Dies bringt einen interessanten Aspekt zu Tage: Ist es besser, eine eigene Tastatur mitzubringen, wenn man sich an den Rechner eines anderen Menschen sieht, denn oftmals dürfte das WC den groesseren Hort der Hygiene darstellen als die Tastatur.

You can disagree about the conclusions made in the articles regarding the withdrawal but for me it´s incomprehensible how President Bush was able to avoid an impeachment so far for all the errors, mistakes and fooleries on his account (incompetent management of the hurrican disaster, transforming a balanced budget in a deeeeep red one, war in iraq, dazzeling dumb memos (jokes with Blair are something for the restroom between the press conferences, misleading people not only in the US but to a lesser extend throughout the world ... )

The reason for this blindness is quite simple: ZFS breaks with so many common ways and means, that all the advantages are note obvious for the common reporter or pundit when you think about it as the n´th iteration of the old theories of filesystems. For the most of them it´s only a new filesystem, mostly reported with the undertone of "that was overdue.UFS is so fucking old". Only when you know the pitfalls of filesystem management by practice you will realize the power and the huge impact of ZFS to the storage landscape.

Mittlerweile ist das Benutzen von Computern zu einer Grundfähigkeit geworden. Mein Vater nutzt Computer schon seit Ewigkeiten, meine kleine Schwester fängt gerade an, den Rechner in ihre Tagesgestaltung einzubauen. Das ganze hat nur einen grossen Nachteil: Die Fähigkeit, Probleme mit Windows zu beseitigen, hat leider nicht im gleichen Maße zugenommen.

Eines dieser hinterlistigen Popup-Fenster hat gerade Frage in mir aufgeworfen: Bin ich etwa schuld an den Stromausfällen? Habe ich eine kaputte Registry oder ein inkonsistentes Filesystem? Habe ich damit diese Eisstuerme im Münsterland provoziert? Das ist furchterregend ....

Es gab mal einen Präsidenten in den USA, der in einem unbeobachteten Moment seinen Beitrag zum Worst Blow Job Contest durch das Zurtatschreiten mit einer Praktikantin vorbereiten wollte. Leider kam das zu früh raus und es hätte ihm beinahe einen der besten Jobs der Welt gekostet, was diese Interaktion mit Sicherheit zumindestens in die Top 3 dieses Wettbewerbes katapultiert, haetten die Republikaner nicht mit einem Millionenaufwand dafür gesorgt, das ein Werk von epischer Breite vor dem Wettbewerb veröffentlicht worden wäre. Auf jeden Fall dürfte diese Aktion den best- und meistuntersuchten Spermafleck der modernen Geschichte hervorgebracht haben.
Nun ... es gibt seit einiger Zeit einen Präsidenten, der sich und sein Land in einen Krieg am Golf gelogen, 2000 Soldaten in den Tod geschickt und sogar ueberlegt hat, einen Fernsehsender zu bombardieren. Ja, und was passiert ? Nix. Kein Untersuchungsauschuss. Kein Komitee zur Beleuchtung. So irgendwie garnichts. Schon seltsam, wie sich Wertmassstäbe verschieben ...

In fact, I've never seen performance improvement on server software with hyperthreading enabled. We recommend customers disable it when running Citrix and our software on the same server."

It seems chip multithreading is harder to implement than everybody thought. But remember, at the end yperthreading is like power management on x86-processors: management of inefficiency. It was invented to rise the utilization of the netburst archictecture as several function units had nothing to do most of the time (As far as i remember the Power-processor had a similar problem at least in in their fourth incarnation)
You should try Solaris on Niagara: An operating system designed from the ground up to use threads with a processor designed from the ground up to execute threads.

The big buzz about the Ultrasparc T1 in the media is almost over. I think the real story will come clear on December 6th. The systems based on this processor will be announced on this day. They are real. I had my fingers on one of these systems not long ago. But the story of eco-responsibility gets traction in the media.
At AlwaysOn is a text about home pc and unix. My opinion to this text: Sure, Solaris will never dominate the market. But: No Unix (Mac OS X is an exception, but it does not really count, as it is a hidden unix) will ever have a huge relevance in the home market, whatever freaks and analysts will tell you. As long as my sister or my dad can´t install a Linux or a Solaris without my help, there will be no dominance in the home desktop space. And i saw experienced system engineers to despair in front of a linux laptop when they came to installing and configuring all the functionalities like power management. This war will be fought between Windows and Mac OS. The enterprise desktop is an entirely different story.

Man kann entweder das Bildblog oder diesen sehr guten Text lesen. Mehr muss man zum Thema Bild-Zeitung nicht wissen:

Die gute Dame hat offensichtlich recht: Sex sells. Und da ist wirklich jedes Pläsierchen dabei: Vom Sex mit Tieren ueber die Frage nach dem korrekt ausgeführten Blowjob bis hin zu Photos von Frauen beim Orgasmus. Oder um es mit Sid zu sagen: Menschen sind ekelhaft.
PS: Dabei habe ich doch nur ein kleines unschuldiges Weblog. Ich sollte vielleicht auch einige Schlafzimmergeschichten hier posten, dann wird die Hitzahl wohl alsbald explodieren...
