The Esquire endorses Obama for president and explains its endorsement in an really striking way:

[...] Bushism must be ripped out, root and branch, everywhere it has been established, or else the presidential election of 2008 is a worthless exercise in futility. Barack Obama may not be the man to do it, but John McCain, for all his laudable qualities, clearly is neither willing nor able to do so.

To continue to govern ourselves this way is unthinkable. It is unsustainable as a democracy to continue to mock so egregiously in secret what we continue to profess in public. That is the task for the next president. That is the main reason to vote for Barack Obama of Illinois. We strongly encourage you to do so.

I hope my travel to the CEC next weekend will be to a country with Obama as the elected upcoming president. There are many reasons to like the USA, but Bush stacked up almost as many reasons to dislike the USA.

Zbigniew Brzezinski, national security adviser to President Jimmy Carter, wrote an excellent article about a development, that transforms a complete country into a country of scared individuals, afraid of everything that is different: "Terrorized by 'War on Terror' - How a Three-Word Mantra Has Undermined America"

Where is the U.S. leader ready to say, "Enough of this hysteria, stop this paranoia"? Even in the face of future terrorist attacks, the likelihood of which cannot be denied, let us show some sense. Let us be true to our traditions.

Perhaps the people in the US should remember the words of Franklin D. Roosevelt:

Was erwartet eigentlich die Nato? Das sich Putin einfach in die Ecke stellt, und nicht dazu sagt, das vitale Sicherheitsinteressen Russlands verletzt werden? Ein Raketenschild, der für seinen nominellen Einsatzzweck vollkommen fehlplaziert ist? Sind da vielleicht doch noch die alten Feindbilder in den Köpfen der Nato? Im Grunde genommen ist das doch das gleiche wie die Kubakrise in klein. Man stellt dem gegenüber eine Beleidung direkt vor die Haustür.

Ich frage mich irgendwie, auf welche Art und Weise ein doppelt schallschnelles Kampfflugzeug mit Aufklärungsauftrag zur Aufstandsbekämpfung dienen kann, wenn sich doch mittlerweile Drohnen als probates Mittel erwiesen haben. Riot Control via Paveway?

Geht es vielleicht einfach nur darum, das man die Piloten woanders braucht ? Im Irak? Oder so als Präsent von Herrn Bush zu seinem Amtsabtritt vielleicht noch der Iran? Weil dreimal auf die Nase fallen ist doch gleich viel besser. Wobei: Afghanistan hätte was werden können, wenn man sich nicht gleich in einen anderen Konflikt gelogen hätte. Brauchen die Amerikaner ihre Kampfflugzeuge vielleicht wo anders. Oder haben die ständigen Einsätze das Material so zermürbt, das man eigentlich nach Geld für Ersatz fragen müsste, aber es sich nicht traut.

Liebe Condi, ich kann nur das sagen, was man auch von Eltern mit zunehmenden Alter (schliesslich sind wir das "alte Europa") immer häufiger gesagt bekommt: Räum deinen Scheiss selber weg ...

Selbst die Zahl 3000 toter Soldaten ist letztlich noch Spin Doctoring, bei einem Krieg den letztlich glaube ich niemand mehr will. Juan Cole schreibt in seinem Blog "Informed Comment", das diese Zahl den Blick auf die ganze Katastrophe verstellt. Selbst wenn man nur die Opfer auf seiten der Koaliationstruppen in die Kalkulation einbezieht. Selbst wenn man nur die Zahl 3000 berücksichtigt, sind jetzt mehr Soldaten gestorben, als am 11. September durch die Hand von Terroristen. Wofür? Welche Nutzen hatte das Opfer? Was ist die Dividende des Blutzolls?

Wie sich doch die Dinge gleichen: Saddam Hussein konnte sich damals nicht aus Kuwait zurückziehen, weil er ein Gesicht zu verlieren hatte. Heute kann sich George W. Bush nicht zurückziehen, weil er die Reste seines Gesichtes nicht verlieren will.

In den USA lief jetzt schon die dritte Folge der neuen ER-Staffel. Die Season-Premiere "Bloodline" konnte ich auch nicht sehen, aber ich konnte zumindestens Graduation Day gucken. Hätte ich nicht tun sollen, jetzt kann ich es noch weniger abwarten bis die Staffel in Deutschland gezeigt wird.

Ein sehr lesenswerter Blogeintrag bei The Nation. Es wird darüber berichtet, das Bill Clinton sich bei einem konservativen Interviewer einmal nicht zurück gehalten hat, sondern klargestellt hat, wie er die Antiterrorpolitik von Herrn Bush sieht:

When a beaten Wallace tried to cover for himself – "… all I can say is, I'm asking you in good faith because it's on people's minds, sir. And I wasn't…" – Clinton nailed him: "There's a reason it's on people's minds. That's the point I'm trying to make. There's a reason it's on people's minds because they've done a serious disinformation campaign to create that impression."

Bin ich eigentlich der Einzige, der bei solchen Berichten wieder Hubschrauber vor Augen hat, die von Flugzeugträgern aus ins Meer geschoben werden.

Im Herdentrieb-Weblog bei zeit.de ist ein interessanter Artikel zum Schwenk der schwedischen Nationalbank zum Euro als Reservedevise:

JP Morgan schrieb in einer kleinen Research Note: “Die Riksbank ist die erste der großen Zentralbanken, die so explizit zwischen Dollar und Euro getauscht hat. Aber sie wird nicht die letzte sein.”

Wenn ich ein bisschen weiter darüber nachdenke, ist es so perfekt verständlich, warum der Iran eine Atombombe oder zumindestens die Fähigkeit dazu haben will: So sehr, wie die herrschende Elite im Iran die USA hasst, ist es ihr sicherlich ein Dorn im Auge, das eigene Oel in Dollar zu verkaufen.Man arbeitet in Teheran ja schon länger daran, das eigene Öl in Euro zu handeln. Nungut, das würde aber wiederum die Finanzierbarkeit des US-Leistungsbilanzdefizites gefährden. Die USA könnten sich also dazu hingerissen fühlen, im Iran zu intervenieren, wo sie doch mit dem Irak jetzt eine geostrategische gut gelegene Basis (habt ihr wirklich geglaubt, das es je um Menschen ging) haben, um in Nahost militärische Macht zu projezieren.

Als Demokratie und Medienstaat ist es den USA nicht mehr möglich opferreiche Kriege zu führen. Das heisst, der Iran wird die Bombe haben wollen, um sich die USA vom Hals zu halten. Ich glaube, vor der iranischen A-Bombe braucht man nicht wirklich Angst zu haben, da sie abschreckende Funktion hat (und Israel auch nicht, denn die iranische Regierung mag aus unserer Sicht eine Macke haben, aber sie ist nicht dumm und am eigenen Selbstmord interessiert). Mit dieser Bombe könnte der Iran jeden Angriff zu einem opferreichen Krieg werden lassen. Und damit den USA die Fähigkeit zur Intervention nehmen.

Das die USA jetzt so sehr insistieren, den Iran zu knebeln ist da genauso verständlich. Sie können es nicht zulassen, das es ein Land gibt, das die USA sowohl am Öl als auch bei ihrer Währung treffen kann, und gleichzeitig mit der A-Bombe in der Hand ein gewisses Selbstbewusstsein an den Tag legt.

Bruce Schneier ist niemand von diesen ewigen Nörglern, er ist einer der respektiertesten Experten zum Thema Kryptographie im Speziellen und Sicherheit im Allgemein. Vielleicht vergleichbar mit Whitfield Diffie. Das sollte man vielleicht wissen, bevor man sich dieses Essay in seinem Blog durchliest. Dieses Blog zählt zu den absoluten Must-Read-Blogs, wenn man sich auch nur einen Hauch für Computersicherheit, Sicherheit im Allgemeinen oder Technologiefolgen interessiert.
Ich zitiere hier mal einige Passagen:

Es ist ja auch in der Tat praktisch. So lange es Terror auf dieser Welt gibt, kann der Präsident sagen, das der Krieg nicht beendet ist. Da die herrschende Klasse in Amerika eigentlich alles tut, um immer mehr Gruppen gegen sich aufzubringen, wird das nicht so schnell der Fall sein. Das ist praktisch, die Kriegführung - gleich wo auf der Welt - baut die Hegemonie sowohl im Ausland als auch im Inland aus.
Dieses "Bonmot" - ausgesprochen vor den Anschlaegen - passt dazu ganz gut:

Einige Experten sagen voraus, das dem Zusammenbruch der amerikanischen Wirtschaft ein Schwenken des Ölhandels auf den Euro vorangeht .Genau dieser Schwenk passiert jetzt im Iran. Man darf gespannt sein, wie lange es dauert, bis die USA in den Iran einmarschieren. Ist ja gleich nebenan.

Patriot Act wird nicht verlängert. G. W. Bush muss um seinen Irakkrieg kämpfen. Die ersten Soldaten werden abgezogen. Die Presse geht mittlerweile aggressiv gegen den Präsidenten vor, in dem sie Skandale vom Zeitpunkt gezielt veröffentlicht. Mehrere enge Berater stehen mittlerweile vor Gerichten. Überlegung: G.W. wird nicht als Präsident das Ende seiner regulären Amtszeit erleben.
