So what's the lesson here? Remember the loonovitch? Steven Milunovich and his peers on Wall Street endlessly advising Sun against spending money on R&D? HP took their advice, and is just running out its momentum; Sun and IBM didn't and are prospering.

Without R&D no Solaris, without R&D no Power6, without R&D no Niagara2, without R&D no Rock. And in my opinion, IBM will bleed on the long term for the minimized R&D on AIX.

It´s a real plague at the moment. Whenever you look at a IT news site, you find one of this IBM video ads. I hope, i´m not the only one, who finds this ads from IBM extremly annoying. Not funny, not informative, not even well made.

Well, not funny ... this isn´t completly correct. I´ve laughed my a... off, when i find the disclaimer below an ad for SAN Volume Controller. Basically they state: "For an storage solution, the purchase of multiple or additional products may be nescessary. This can create additional costs". Oh yeah .... for all this Global services guys they sell to you, while they try to use your old storage with it. After their failure do do this, they sell IBM storage to you. Not much later, after the third big escalation, they tell you have to buy xSeries, pSeries or iSeries. And when you still have money they try to sell you a mainframe. And when you´ve routed them from your yard, they go to your CxO and take your complete datacenter with outsourcing.

Okay,okay ... i´know .... slightly overstated I have no knowledge about the Storage Controller, but this came into my mind while reading it

Vielleicht sollte ich im Voraus sagen, das ich zu jenen Menschen gehoere, die kein quasisexuelles Verhältnis zu einer bestimmten Tonträgergattung haben. Aber damit bin ich wahrscheinlich ein ziemlich normaler Käufer dieser Produkte. Wenn man sich fragt, warum auf dauer das Geschaeftsmodell, CDs zu verteilen wohl keine Zukunft mehr haben wird, braucht man sich nur die eigenen Kaufgewohnheiten angucken. Und bei mir sieht das so aus:
Ich habe mittlerweile wohl einige hundert euro bei iTunes gelassen. .mp3, die legalerweise frei herunterzuladen sind, sind unzaehlige in meiner iTunes Bibliothek. Ich spiegel quasi den Tonspion auf meiner Festplatte.Gekauft habe ich in den letzten 12 Monaten genau eine CD (Rob Dougans Furious Angels, aber auch nur, weil es die nicht bei iTunes gab).
Jetzt ersetze man bei vielen Kiddies iTunes mit Gnutella, Limewire et al und es wird offensichtlich warum die Musikindustrie allenortens Rückzuggefechte führt und warum Apple mittlerweile die Bedigungen diktieren kann. Eigentlich wird es Zeit, sich ein neues Geschäftsmodell einfallen zu lassen, aber statt dessen wird sich auf Klingeltöne konzentriert.
