There is an cool video on Youtube. It answers an interesting question: What would happen, when you run a Blackbox and an earthquake occurs? With 6.7 richter magnitudes ? Well ... after this experiment, we can say: It would operate just fine. Besides of some minor problem, but that will be fixed soon. Some power cable did not stayed in their sockets.

PS: I would bet, that the army will take one and test if the Blackbox can withstand a near-miss of an artillery shell. At least, this would be a nice experiement for the Brainiacs or the Mythbusters

Cringely believes, that Blackbox was developed by Google, but gives no real evidence for it. Furthermore i don´t think, that the formfactor is a problem. When you need a datacenter so fast, you will rent it from people who have one near of you. This would be even faster than flying one to the next cargo airport and transport it from there to your site.

Ashlee Vance comments the Blackbox announcement and cites the founder of RLX with the words:

Will customers go for the kit? Well, one of the leading server experts around – blade server pioneer and RLX founder Chris Hipp – thinks Sun has a shot with the White Trash flash. The obvious customers in the financial services, oil and gas and very, very big enterprise markets will consider the systems no matter how weird they seem to be, according to Hipp.

Carl Howe thinks, that Blackbox will transform corporate computing in the future.:

Assuming Sun delivers on its promise to sell and lease these systems in the second half of 2007, this could easily be one of the most transformational computing products of the decade for business. It changes data centers from a build-it-yourself business to one where they are available off the shelf and on demand. And, like the standardized shipping containers in which they are built, most people will never give them a second thought.
