Today we have announced the 1 TB tape drive: Sun Microsystems Announces World's First One Terabyte Tape Storage Drive. The the T10000B delivers 120 MB/sec throughput with 1 TB native. The next competitor (LTO4) has 800 GB native.The only disadvantage: This tape drives are enterprise hardware and build to last ... so the pricetag is $37.000. So don´t wait for it as you backup solution at home.

Die wenigsten Leute wissen es, die bisher nur mit der Unix-Seite von Sun zu tun hatten: Wir haben seit dem Zukauf von StorageTek auch eine Abteilung, die sich mit Mainframes beschäftigt, weil viele Produkte aus dem Tapebereich eben auch für Mainframes gedacht sind.

Und wenn ich jetzt mal eine ganz dunkele Seite (für einen Hardcore-Unixer wie mich) von Sun Präsentieren darf: Sun hat einen eigenen Mainframe

Last year we invested over $8m in mainframe hardware and software. We have a brand new z9 with all the latest channels and, like the rest of the world, are doing our best to stay current on z/OS. I just checked with Fred Casanova and since our mainframe upgrades we went from 2100 MIPS to 5269 MIPS. Our LPAR's range from z/OS 1.4 to z/OS 1.8 and we have 2500 MIPS installed and running z/OS v1.6.

Wenn man ein eindeutiges Commitment für seine Mainframeprodukte abgibt, braucht man eben auch Equipment, damit man die Produkte entwickeln, ausprobieren, testen, validieren kann. Nur möchte ich nicht das Grinsen des IBM-SalesRep sehen, wenn dieser zu Sun kommt, um sein Tagwerk zu verrichten
