Well, without dipping into GAAP accounting, we generated a lot of cash in the quarter (more than $320m), and getting from cash to GAAP income involves a fair number of line items associated with acquisition accounting, amortization of goodwill, tax provisions, stock option expensing - all of which, on a non-cash basis, added up to 22 cents worth of charges.

IBM published a new Redbook about the deployment of one of their products on Solaris 10: IBM WebSphere Application Server V6.1 on the Solaris 10 Operating System. The redbook is a joint effort of IBM and Sun employees. It´s an excellent whitepaper for all people thinking about the deployment of Solaris 10 for their appservers. This whitepaper goes way beyond a simple basic installation and tuning guide. It includes the usage of Zones, Resource Management, SMF, Least Privileges. Even the Solaris 8 Migration Assisant (aka Solaris 8 Zones in Solaris 10) is covered as a way to migrate old websphere installations until transitioned to newer WS versions.

This is simply not fair ... we at Sun solved our problems, we increased our profits and margins, we lowered our costs. We´ve announced important deals for our future. All was set for the stock to going upwards ... and now the complete fscking stock market goes downhill.

From my perspective as a Sun employee, the possible move of the next huge content distributor to Blue-ray is a good thing: Java is one key component of the Blue-ray format. You see, we are everywhere

Many people think, that custom chips for appliances are faster for their respective task than general purpose chips. For such areas like graphical processing this is true. GPUs are so powerful, many people think about their usage in computing. But i made an interesting observation in the SPECjbb2005 list: The company Azul Systems developed a special purpose processor for Java. The top of the line 7280 system consists out of 16 processors and provides 872972 SPECjbb2005 bops. Thus the performance per processor is 54561 SPECjbb2006 bops. A single T2000 has an perfomance of 96523 SPECjbb2005 bops. Thus the general purpose processor UltraSPARC T1 (okay, almost general purpose) has twice the performance of the custom build Vega2 processor on a per core basis.

Another comparision is interesting to: Assume a workload that can be scaled horizontally . You need an aggregated performance of at least 850.000 SPECjbb2005 bops. You could use 1 Azul 7280 or 9 T6300 blades. You would assume that the Azul solution is more efficient. But the the 7280 takes 14 rack units and is rated with a typical wattage of 3250 Watts (as specified on their website). 9 T6300 would have a size of 10 rack units and round about 2700 watts. With Intel C2D the performance calculation would be similar, although not in the same power envelope.

The Azul system has an different advantage, it provides a single image to application, thus the java application would be able to use the full 756 Gigabytes of memory. But at the end, it´s an interesting evidence that custom build hardware isn´t necessarily faster or more efficient than general purpose hardware.

Interesting things happened in the Multiverse of Ubuntu: GlassFish (App Server) , NetBeans (development), JavaDB and the JDK were integrated into the ubuntu multiverse repository. Now it´s trivial to install those components. The Register reports quite positive about it, but i agree, that it´s more probable, that the outages of the websites is owed to the imminent release of Ubuntu 7.04 and not exactly to the integration of our Java toolset.

Panchaleswar Nayak points to an interesting research paper about Writing Solaris Device Drivers in Java. I find this development very promising. You only have to write your drivers once for all platforms that implements the Squawk Java virtual machine. The next step to drive this concept would be the definition of an common generic interface between drivers and the operating system integrated in different operating systems outside the Solaris world. You would be able to use the same driver in different operating system without recompilation.

This would be great help in the competition against the windows ecosphere with their overhelming amount of drivers, as the fragmentation of the unix market from the look of driver developers would disappear.

Nun ist es also soweit: Sun wird den Sourcecode von Java offenlegen und unter der GPL lizensieren. Nun habe ich in meiner Mailbox einige Anfragen gehabt, warum nicht die CDDL genutzt worden ist. Eine Mail beinhaltete die etwas bissige Frage, wie es denn nun mit meiner ProCDDL-Haltung stünde.

Zunächst einmal im kurzen: Ich denke, das die GPL für Java wirklich die beste Alternative darstellt. Es ist wie mit Medikamenten. Es gibt eine Problemstellung (Krankheit) , es gibt eine Lösung (Medikament), und die Lösung hat eine Hauptwirkung und eine reihe von Nebenwirkungen. Das Medikament gegen geschlossenen Code sind OSS-Lizenzen und man hat mehr dieser Lizenzen zur Verfügung als das es wirksame Kopfschmerzmittel gibt.

Wie sucht man sich also eine solche Lizenz aus? Um die Medikamentenanalogie weiter zu nutzen: Man nimmt das Medikament mit der gewünschten Hauptwirkung und mit den Nebenwirkungen, mit denen man am Besten leben kann. Oder bei der die Nebenwirkungen sogar noch einen gewissen Nutzen haben (Blutverdünnendes Aspirin).

Nun ist es so, das bei der Lizenzierung von Betriebsystem-Code ein teilweise geschlossener Sourcecode durchaus gewollt sein kann, um die Markdurchdringung zu erhöhen. Wenn jemand nicht freigeben möchte wie man die Super-duper-detonator-envidati-9999-GTIlx Karte nun programmiert, kann das okay sein. Die GPL hätte nun die Nebenwirkung, eben dies nicht zu erlauben. Dafür gibt es ein Medikament mit Namen CDDL, das eben diese Nebenwirkung nicht hat.

Andererseits möchte man bei einer Programmiersprache und dessen unmittelbare Hilfstools verhindern, das irgendjemand Erweiterungen entwickelt, so das es ein Java von Hersteller A und von Hersteller B gibt, die zueinander zwar irgendwie ähnlich sind, aber den Kunden an die Geschmacksrichtung A oder B binden. Das Medikament hierzu ist die GPL. Die unerwünschte Nebenwirkung(Haarausfall und schwarze Zähne) ist hier plötzlich die erwünschte Nebenwirkung(Blutverdünnung).

Es gibt keine Lizenz, die immer und für jeden Fall das Optimum darstellt. Man muss dort suchen. Ich bleibe dabei, das die CDDL für Solaris (und eigentlich auch für andere Betriebsysteme) die beste Wahl darstellt, wenn man die Markdurchdringung und die Grösse der ISP-Ecosphere als Ziel sieht. Die Freiheit, Weiterentwicklungen nicht zurückgeben zu müssen, ist aber für das Einheitliche Sprachgebilde "Java" zu gefährlich, als das man sie zulassen könnte.

My colleague Dirk zapped through the available TV-Channels and was quick-witted enough to take a snapshot of the tv screen. So now you can use your favorite programming language you can even smell so.
