On 4. April 2006 Stephen Shankland cited Judy Chavis, director of business development for Dell's enterprise product group about offering Solaris x86:

"Is it the next industry standard around operating systems? That's what it would take for us to do that," she said. So far, the answer is a definitive no. "Since the year started, I haven't had a Solaris x86 customer come into the briefing center," Chavis said

Dell's now advantaged in the marketplace, as well, and alongside Intel and IBM, can better serve customers wanting a single hand to shake (throat to choke isn't the experience either of us are seeking). Reciprocally, Solaris is clearly advantaged by association with Dell, the company that invented volume success in the IT marketplace. The relationship broadens the market for the both of us.

It´s interesting how the times have changed. Not long ago, Sun carried the meme "Good hardware, but expensive" with it. Now the Inquirer reports, that we are cheaper than HP and Dell.

Dell announced to build servers with AMD processors. Finally the accepted the inevitable. You can´t stay in a market with products that are inferior to the ones of the competition. Amazing, how the landscape changes the last few month.

Es war eine Woche mit sehr vielen Neuigkeiten. Wir haben die Quartalszahlen fuer Q1FY06 bekanntgeben. Über die nächste Prozessorengeneration sind auch wieder neue Gerüchte hochgekommen.
OpenSolaris gewinnt deutlich an Fahrt. Auf der ubuntu-Mailingliste wurde mit Nexenta OS ein auf OpenSolaris und Debian basierendes GNU/Solaris angekündigt.
Im Register wird ueber Rock und einige Feinheiten des Niagara-Prozessors spekuliert. Die "Oracle"-Specialedition des Niagara scheint wohl auch Realitaet zu werden. Auf Dauer wird sich Oracle etwas einfallen lassen müssen. Je mehr sich die Industrie auf Multicore-Prozessoren spezialisiert, und je länger Oracle sich ziert, dort ein vernünftiges Lizensierungschema einzuführen, desto mehr wird den Kunden auffallen, das man nicht für jede Anwendung Oracle benötigt.
Apropos neue Server: Ich habe am Donnerstag einen Vortrag gehalten, in dem es unter anderem über die X4100/X4200-Server (also die Galaxy-Serie ging). Die Systeme werden sehr positiv aufgenommen. Nur dumm, das die Presse momentan über Lieferprobleme schreibt.
An der Storagefront gibt es auch etwas neues: T10000. Mehr Platz,höhere Geschwindigkeit, und ganz wichtig, nachdem Tapes mit Kreditkartendaten dazu neigen, verlustig zu gehen: Verschlüsselung im Laufwerk.
Zu den Quartalszahlen nur eines: Die Meinung ist nicht so vernichtend, wie sie noch vor drei oder vier Quartalen gewesen wäre. Auch wenn Solche Artikel helfen, denn sie räumen mit einer Reihe von Fehlwahrnehmungen im Markt auf, beispielweise das Sun teuer ist.
Am Ende: Wie schnell sich die Meinung ändern kann, zeigt der Fall Dell. Noch vor wenigen Wochen als idealtypische IT-Firma glorifiziert, wird heute auf Dell eingeschlagen.
Mein Lieblingskommentar ist:

"[Dell is] too much of a one-trick pony," says a former high-ranking Dell executive. "They're not innovating, or building enough new businesses. They've executed flawlessly for 10 years, but that's kind of an impossible thing to continue."

Dell wird vorgeworfen keine Innovation zu treiben. Interessanterweise wird Sun vorgeworfen, zuviel Geld in R&D zu stecken. Nur: Woher sollen Innovationen kommen, wenn nicht durch Forschung? Forschung kostet Geld! Vielleicht lernen jetzt auch Analysten nachhaltiger zu denken und nicht nur in 3-Monats-Zyklen.
