I deactivated the twitter integration into the header today. I found the Twitter header quite useful for reporting from the CEC2007 and i will use this method to report from other big events like trade shows or conferences.

CEC had a really interesting effect on the access patterns of my blog: Before CEC the colour of the US in Google Analytics was a light, barely visible green. Now it jumped to a solid friendly green. I hope, that these are really people in the US, and not only Europeans in Vegas

The real surge came from RSS. The subscriber count jumped by 50 people to nearly 550. Last week was the first week with out a drop under 400 (out of a strange reason, once a week the subscriber count drops slightly under 400). Hundreds of live hits on each day on each article. That was really cool. Thankyou.

The integrated twitter-feed was quite successful. I´ve got some interesting feedback about the life twitters. Even from outside the company. BTW: The word, that CEC is our premier technical conference got traction at our customer base.

From the blogging perspective i´ve made some conclusions and lessons-learned:
1.Although the WLAN infrastructure was better than in Moscone last year, it was somewhat problematic to get internet access. 4000 Sunnies is the baddest thing that can happen to a network infrastructure. The rumours on the floor ranged from saturation of the WLAN-router address tables to complete saturation of internet connection of the hotel. But i have no confirmation for any for this rumours. As an engineer doesn´t come under two WLAN enabled gadgets all rumors are prefectly feasible...
2. I would take my boosted Linksys with the high-gain omni with me to the next conference. I hope TSA allows me to checkin this 1 meter antenna beast. WLAN access guaranteed. (Altough the toasted colleagues in the hallway are an bad side effect)
3. Next time, i would use an offline editor.
4. I need a new Mac ... badly ... the tooling on Windows is horrible. YMMV. This was the main reasons why i didn´t made a podcast from CEC. You really miss Garageband when you can´t use it ....
5. Next time i will print "Visit c0t0d0s0.org" on my IloveSolaris-Tshirt. Many people know my blog, but nobody knows the person behind it
6. Was really fun to blog from CEC2007.

Five or six people already asked me, why i use my smartphone (an Nokia E61, when you look around at CEC it seems, that half the production of this phone has gone to Sun) in the sessions and type messages troughout the . It´s not that i´m ruining Sun by sending short messages to a love interest (okay, at least not at the keynotes, and i prefer IM for that ... national GSM short messages are expensive, the price for international ones is outright obscene ).

It´s much simpler ... i feed my blog with this phone. Well, not directly and not for the long articles, but when you look at the front page you see a block of five short messages on the top. This block is feeded by my twitter-account, This feed gets it´s input from the simplified mobile twitter interface. And now the E61 comes into play: It has WLAN, it has a webbrowser .. all you need to feed twitter (and thus all you need to blog a short message) while sitting in a keynote or walking around at the conference. This is Web 2.0 as i want it .. a simple way to connect services to produce content with several (very different) input devices.

The executive keynotes started. At the moment Andy speaks about new developments in x86. Sounds really cool, but the presentation is tagged confidential. You can expect really cool new things in this space.

Ich hatte ja heute noch einen zweiten Vortragsslot auf der Re-Publica. Dieser endete beinahe in einer Katastrophe. Etwa anderhalb Stunden vor meinem Vortrag, höhe Bahnhof Falkensee, habe ich meine UMTS-Karte aus dem Powerbook gezogen ... Ergebnis Rechnerabsturz. Erst mein zweiter, nicht absichtlich herbeigefuehrter, Absturz in 4 Jahren MacOS X. Danach: Präsentation 0 Bytes. Wären nicht Kinder im Zug gewesen, hätte man das "Scheisse" bis zur Kalkscheune gehoert.

Denken: "Okay, Du bist Profi. Das ueberstehst du auch noch. Cool bleiben"

In Berlin in die bahn.comfort-Lounge gesetzt. Erstmal Kaffeetrinken. Und binnen einer Stunde einen vollständigen Vortrag wieder aus dem Boden stampfen. Für diese Umstände, ist er glaube ich ganz passabel geworden. Aber ich warte mal ab, ob ich da noch Feedback bekomme. Ich werde den Vortrag heute abend noch um Tippfehler bereinigen und dann auch wieder online stellen.

Und jetzt werd ich wieder nach Hamburg fahren, mich betrinken und schmutzige Lieder singen ....

Cool ... I´ve got cited as "Sun´s Joerg Moellenkamp" at Computerworld. Sorry, but this was able to put a smile on my face at a somewhat mediocre day. But to make one think clear. I work for Sun, but in this blog writes Joerg´s Joerg Moellenkamp. Not the one of Sun. But most of the time both Joerg Moellenkamps have similar opinions.

Hmm, i really starting to like Google Reader. It´s quite fast to work with and i like the feature to starring blog posts (I use it as a marker for news i want to blog about). You should give it a try.
There is only one thing i hate about online reader, but this point has nothing to do with Google or Bloglines or similar services. The problem is: When you wan´t to read your news without an online connection, you need an offline reader ... as most of the time in a train, you are offline ...

Nein, ich lege mich nicht unter den Asi-Toaster ... ich schreibe jetzt im Blog von unseren "local Solaris luminaries" als Gast mit. Also c0t0d0s0 ab jetzt auch Solarium. Mein erster Artikel ist erstmal nur eine Übernahme aus meinem Blog, aber schauen wir mal, was draus wird.

... verliert man echt die Lust am Bloggen, besonders wenn man morgens um Sieben schon 2900 unmoderierte Spamkommentare aus seinem Blog fischen muss ... dabei habe ich das Moderieren nur 5 Tage schleifen lassen.

Die mediale Verwertung von Katastrophen in Deutschland hat ja unmittelbare Konsequenzen für die Menschen, die diese Katastrophe erleiden muessen. Ist es eine Nachricht, dann regnet es Spenden. Wird nicht berichtet, okay .... hmmm ... dann gibt es eben nichts. Ist ja nicht Teil unserer Wahrnehmungsphäre, keine Delle in unserer Wohlfühlsphäre. Titania Carthaga weisst auf genau diesen Umstand hin.
Worum geht es ? In Ostafrika nimmt eine grosse Hungersnot ihren Lauf:

Tagesanzeiger.ch: Die Hilfsorganisation Oxfam International hat den grössten Hilfsaufruf ihrer Geschichte an die britische Öffentlichkeit gerichtet... Von der Hungersnot sind mindestens elf Millionen Menschen in Ostafrika betroffen. Neben Kenia leiden die Menschen auch in Äthiopien, Eritrea, Somalia und Dschibuti sowie in Tansania und Burundi Not. Zur Dürre kamen unlängst heftige Regenfälle dazu, die den ausgetrockneten Boden überschwemmten. Tausende Menschen mussten vor dem Hochwasser fliehen, Hilfsgüter konnten nicht mehr überall ausgeteilt werden.

Dem Aufruf von Titania, diese Nachricht auch in mein Weblog zu übernehmen, komme ich gerne nach. Vielleicht kann man die Fähigkeit von Weblogs Nachrichten zumindestens einen Schubs zu geben, auch mal für etwas benutzen, das im globalen Massstab Bedeutung hat. Ich bitte um freundliche Beachtung von Titanias Eintrag und um entsprechende Verlinkung.

Es ist ja nicht immer alles wunderbar im Staate Sun. Eine weltweit agierende Firma hat nun einmal das Potential viele gute Sachen zu tun, aber ebenso können da Dinge herauskommen, die sagen wir mal in ihrer Qualität hinterfragens- und verbesserungswürdig sind.

Eigentlich garkeine schlechte Idee von IT&W: Nun denn ... da ich auch noch Kapazitäten auf meinem System frei habe biete ich allen Interessierten an, ihr Blog hier zu betreiben. Momentan unter Serendipity 0.9 und Linux, sobald 1&1 endlich den neuen Root-Server ranschafft unter Solaris 10/x86 und Serendipity. Zusätzlich werde ich hierdie Artikel sammeln, von denen ich denke, das sie mir am Besten gelungen sind. Unter Favorites ist dieser Eintrag auch im Rahmen der Navigation verfügbar. Robert Basic hat mich da auf die Idee gebracht, das viele Dinge hier einfach im Archiv verschwinden, ohne das irgendwann noch mal darauf zugegriffen wird, es sei denn, sie werden von irgendwoher noch mal verlinkt.... zu schade darum ...
