Oracle´s presentation about the Sun acquisition

Before speculating to much about the deal i suggest a short view in the presentation "Oracle Buys Sun" provided by Oracle. Some key sentences from my perspective:

Expected to deliver an integrated system, from applications to disk, optimized for higher performance, improved reliability and enhanced security
"Optimize Solaris and Oracle for better performance, reliability, and manageability"
"Protects massive customer investment in SPARC"
"Open Storage built with industry standard servers and components" - hey, just as an idea ... Oracle as a dataservice ?
"Sustain Solaris as an industry standard OS for Oracle software"
"Continue Open Storage and Systems focus and innovation"

Eigenartig... Die einen betonen die Software, andere die Hardware. Ich hatte eh das Gefühl, dass, Jonathan unbedingt Sun verkaufen will (was ich nicht gut find) Cisco und Oracle die besseren Käufer wären. Nun muss ich sagen, dass es stimmt: Das ist definitiv Oracles bester Deal aller Zeiten. Eine DB ist auch ein Storage... Was bekommen Sie? Einen Unterbau (Sparc, Solaris) ein Storage (open Storage), gute Middleware (Java, Glassfish & Co.) und um dann alles noch schön irgendwo abzulegen, haben sie auch noch SAM-FS/Q-FS, Lustre und die ganze StorageTek-Serie samt Bandbibliotheken... Kinderherz, was willst du mehr. Es scheint allerdings noch keiner gemerkt zu haben, dass dies auch ein Gewaltiger Schlag gegen Linux werden kann. RedHat ist den Größten Kunden los (die können jetzt OpenSolaris nehmen) und es besteht keine Notwendigkeit mehr, BTRFS weiter zu entwickeln... Ich prophezeie mal schwere Zeiten für Linux...

bin grade am Überlegen, wofür ich noch LNX brauche.
Hm. Der VMware-Server Client läuft nur als Firefox LNX Plugin (oder Windows).

Selbst wenn Linux wieder zurück in die Garage geht, haben wir immer noch BSD

Thank goodness for that. A very good fit. The IBM deal was so close. It's been a bit of a roller coaster ride.

Ich bin ja gespannt was aus Java und dem Ökosystem drumrum wird. Wenn sich die Leute vom Oracle (ehemals BEA) JRockit und Sun Java mal zusammensetzen und ihr Know-How zusammenschmeißen schadet das sicher nicht. Was aus Application-Servern, ESB, etc. werden wird kann ich mir nicht vorstellen. Auf eine zusammengelegte Entwicklung der JVM freue ich mich aber jetzt schon.
