After not really thinking a lot about it, i´ve choosed the later option. But after holding a presentation i thought a little bit different about sitting five hours in a train.(I´m not really sure if this is cheaper, as i´m at home at 20:00 pm instead of 17:30pm, but that´s a different question)ö But one fact made this a little bit better for me: Leipzig has a Starbucks now. It´s in a few minutes walking distance to the main station. Dopplr is a service to share your travel plans in your peer group. So you can look up, which colleagues are in the same city. Now, before i get to my doubts about such "Where I am" services, there is a more general question: About the "Qui bono" of such a pissing contest. Well ... it´s a service without an compelling use case. When i´m travelling to a city, i simply look into the calendars of my colleagues or send them a sms. I don´t need a service for this. And to say it frankly: I don´t meet with people for a drink just because of having the same company name on the business card.

Albeit Web 2.0, communities and social networking are nice things, they should have a clear advantage. And i don´t see this advantage in dopplr. So .. of what avail is this contest: Maybe only many new users and validated email adresses for dopplr ...

My primary rant about such "Where i am"-services is not specific for dopplr. It´s the same problem with services like plazes.com. You give away a very sensible part of data about your life and possibly the life of others: "Where are you at a certain point of time?" The answer to this question answers a more interesting question: "Where are you not at a certain point of time?". For example: Not at home. And this is an interesting answer for some shady businesses, like freelance possession transfer aka larceny.

You have to anwser some questions to yourself when you sign up for such a service:
  • Do you trust the provider of the service? E.g.: It´s data protection policies, their practices in handling data, their practices in handling their backups ...
  • Do you trust the security of the software? E.g.: There was a problem with a large community portal in Germany allowing everybody to download the profiles
  • Do you have enough physical (locks,CCTV, alarms) or organisatorial (insurances) protection to cover the increased risk.
And as high qualified workers tend to earn more money and tend to have rather wealthy peer group, even the usenames and passwords of Sun or IBM employees for dopplr gathered by trojans or security leaks may be quite useful.

In the end this may be a little bit paranoid. But only because you are not paranoid, this doesn´t mean that they are not after you.

Ich glaube, ich will einfach nur noch auf eine einsame Insel. Heute morgen auf dem Weg zur U-Bahn die Überreste von 2 Verbundscheiben gesehen. Bei einer fehlte das Auto, bei der anderen stand ein Mercedes-Kombi davor. Heckscheibe eingeschlagen, Kofferraumabdeckung zur Seite gerissen. Wissen diese Idioten eigentlich, das sie neben dem Verlust etwaiger Gegenstände den viel groesseren Schaden mit dem wahlosen Einschlagen von Scheiben produzieren? Ich habe mal für eine Volvo-Seitenscheibe 500 Euro bezahlt ... was die beim Benz kostet, moechte ich garnicht so genau wissen. Aufhängen ... an etwaigen Weichteilen ... am höchsten Baum ... mit Stacheldraht. Wobei ich mir gerade überlege, ob es nicht sinnvoll wäre den Wagen auszuräumen und einfach alle Türen offen zu lassen. Aber dann werden wahrscheinlich testosterongeschwängerte Pubertätsversager den Wagen irgendwann vollkotzen und -kacken. Hmm ... vielleicht leiht mir ja die verehrte Frau D. ihre Kettensaege. Mein Auto hats uebrigens nicht betroffen, ich hatte wohl Glück, das ich meinen Wagen verliehen hatte ... sonst parkt der da in der Nähe ...

Von hinten schallt es gerade "Noch frischen Filterkaffee" ... mit der Synchronstimme von "Elfrieeeede, wo ist der Bohnerwachs" (Leser, die nicht den ersten Teil der Werner-Zeichentrickfilme gesehen haben, können leider nicht die vokalen Qualen verstehen, die das bedeutet) ... oder zumindestens von einer nahen Verwandten. Übrigens ... wenn die Bahn darüber nachdenkt, die Lokführer durch Computer zu ersetzen ... bitte weitermachen mit den Bistrodurchsagen, die einen herzlich dazu einladen, 2 Euro 80 bei Mitropa für einen Kaffee zu versenken ...

Also arbeiten. Nun ... das war so geplant, als mein Powerbook noch nicht im Himmel für altgediente Elektronik weilte. Mein neues Apple-Notebook (privat beschafft) ist noch nicht da. Jetzt fällt boese auf, das bei meinem für Solaris-Spielereien gekaufen Notebook die WLAN-Karte noch nicht mal von Linux unterstützt wird. Arbeiten ... geht also auch nicht. Und jetzt merkt man ploetzlich das vier Stunden sehr lang werden können.

Das eine angealterte Frau im Golf Cabrio fast noch noch durch dauerndes 10km/h langsamer fahren als erlaubt und 50-Tonner-gleiches beschleunigen fast dafür gesorgt hätte, das ich zu spät zum Einchecken komme, war dann nur noch ein Nebenkriegsschauplatz.
