Forcing Oracle customers to use Sun X4170/X4440/X4450/X4640 with 7310/7410 alone will make Sun at least break even. The problem is you will push EMC/NetApp/Dell/HP guys away.(Oracle used to be a huge Dell customer themselves)
Also, keeping the Sparc division would eventually bleed Oracle out until Larry couldn't do it anymore.
1. Do you have really read the document linked in this article? Don't think so, because Oracle wants to make Sun profitable without such "forcing" and describes how to do that in that document.
2. Do you really think that SPARC has bleeded money from Sun? Well ... i would ask you to look at Mr. Fowlers presentation about UltraSPARC T series of the Oracle+Sun event and listen to the ROI part when he talks about T series ...
Interesting read.
I hope it works out as they plan. It took a couple of days until the last ticket my colleague opened with ORCL reached somebody who had more than a basic idea of how Oracle databases work...and that may only be, because he knows somebody higher up in the support-organization at Oracle personally and sort of short-circuited the system... (We don't deal with SUN-Support, so I can't compare). Clearly, providing support for such a large and complicated product is difficult.
The support from Sun is better.
Oracle: metalink support is one of the worst support of the market. Most of my Oracle customers don't open cases with Oracle because it is very slow for resolve cases. It isn't useful for critica cases, and it demands a lot of resources of the customer fill web-pages, replying more web-pages with answers. It is a pity that the support of Sun will be worst
I heard that No RSVP is necessary for the webcast this is great.. stuff
Interesting Document, especially Page three and four.
I can't agree that Support over Internet Portalsl/Metalink what ever will be better then Customer Support by phone. Yes the Customer Care Center has its problems and is far from being perfect, ask the Case Owner or the SPOC and REOS Guys. But its quite more personal and you'r able to open a Case within short time. Normally you get a quick response from an case owner Especially in Mission Critical you get a lot of people who are able to give you a qualified support. For me as a sun customer, i want to get a person at the phone. Especially when we open Support Cases. I'mm working for a companie who was also not very pleased with IBIS Access, cause its a pain to open a case. I also want to be able to use Sunsolve in the Future sometimes you find a lot of useful informations to get a solution for a known Problem. Metalink is a closed system and pure Chaos. My Oracle DBA's are not very pleased with this kind of tool. I assume a lot of Sun Customers will facing its problems with the Oracle Support, not about quality, but the way cases will be handled. Only my opinion
The transcription shows a very silly attide about Oracle.
Oracle= clever. We do well the things. Sun= silly people that does bad its job. It is supossed to merge the best of the two comanies. Only take the business, and think that you are the best is a childiss behaivour. You can't buy a company and say to your employees you did all wrong. It is also stupid to do the assertion: we'll be very rich with Sun in one year. It may be not possible. How will you do that? Rising prices a lot? It may help for a few years, but you will lose customers in the long run. A importart part of the speech has been: are bad. A Sun partner will do best to dedicate to other tasks. It is very dificult and risky to merge two companies so fast. There is a big risk of lost customers, and it shows a few respect to its customers. Mi vision of Oracle is: 1- Company with expensive products. 2- Company with a bad support. Metalink is the worst support that I know. 3- The buy companies. Usually rises the prices of products that have been bought. Solaris support will be more expensive. 4- It finish a lot of products of other companies. Its customers are abandoned in a few months. Wit the years a I try to use alternative to Oracle when a project begins: PostgreSQL/MySQl/SQL-Server ( The price of enterprise edition, the policy with cores and standby licensing are a non sense). Now I will try avoid Solaris and use Linux/BSD. |
