A clarification in regard of the SXCE EOL

Okay, i have the inkling, that there is something on the pathto be misunderstood: The End-of-Live of SXCE isn't the end of an open-source Opensolaris. Vastly simplified its just one thing: Switching over the OS consolidations building the thing called Solaris or Opensolaris Community Edition from SVR4 packages (old packaging) to IPS (new packaging). Nothing more, but on the other side nothing less, because it's quite a project.
The will be no SXCE distribution (old style) at a future point in time, but there will distribution that produces the same result on the disk, just with a different packaging and still with the capability to install on it's own. As Glynn wrote:

My concern with this announcement is what this will mean for older hardware. When I looked at switching from SXCE to OpenSolaris 2009.6, I found that it now required a newer OBP version than I could install on many of my systems (UltraSparc II based systems mostly) or else a rather difficult work around. If it weren't for this mis-feature, I would be thrilled by this announcement.
There are some ways to work around the OBP limitations .... i have to look in my heap of links about the trick ....

Yay, I'm in the process of installing OpenSolaris on a laptop right now, using automated installer. So far it has taken 2 hours, 1½ hour of which was spent on downloading all the files from a local pkg mirror
I really hope the current way of delivering packages will be reconsidered, since the current way of delivering every little file separately isn't very efficient.

That's strange ... my last AI install (it was for a sparc server) didn't took that long while using a local rep ....
I figured out what was wrong today. The manifest file from the install server was not applied during the installation, so the installer defaulted to it's own values, including not using my pkg mirror. I also wondered by the user I could log in with was "jack" and not the one I had specified...
When I got this corrected today, the installation time dropped by 1 hour to 1 hour and 15 minutes, which I guess is acceptable.

Doing a full blown dvd with all the needed packages would be fine, since i don't have a working w-lan card for the solaris file server. And connecting the router to the switch is to much fuss. I don't want to protect all machines from internet attacks, some just don't have an internet connection. And the file server is one of them.
This is the main reason, why i prefered sxce in the past.
So please make a dvd image or better an usb stick image, to make people, which don't internet any server happy.

I missed the repo full download. But even if i had not, this is not a bootable install stick. Providing a stick image, which you just dd or copy via a simple windows tool would make things much easier.
This may sound lazy, but most solaris users are lazy, when it comes to preparing install media or setting up install servers.

You can dd the iso image directly to a usb stick; that's mentioned in the README.
Yes, it's not bootable, but trust me, you don't want to boot from a CD with a repository on it. It would be unbearably slow due to the number of files.

Does it mean that all solaris distros is going to be more debian like?

I still miss the SXDE
If it is all consolidated and run like debian with gnu support it is ok. But suns software Compiler and debugger has the priority.
It can't be that one and the same distro runs on servers and netbooks. The base system should be the same. Greater Linux and Gnu compatibility is an advantage.
