The venerable X4600M2 will have a successor this year. You already find some technical specs of the upcoming X4640 at the Sun website: Sun Fire X4640 Specs. The X4640 can use to the AMD Instanbul six-core CPU, so: 48 cores in 4 RU. Should be a really nice VDI or VMware system

Any plan for a similar 8 proc system using Intel processors? Or are you waiting for the 8-core nehalem before they are worth it?
8 Proc with the old Xeons isnīt worth the effort to implement it. The system wouldnīt really scale to 8 proc. The effects would be much worser than the missing fourth ccHT connection at the Opteron.
The Nehalems available at the moment arenīt capable to do 8-sockets. So we have to wait for Beckton.
With the 8-socket entabled Nehalem, the situation is a completly different one, but there Intel has to get itīs pieces together.
