Very nice presentation. Especially I like the slide on "nexenta":
"It really is Solaris kernel + Linux userland." -> "Sun, are you listening?" Oh yes! That's what I dream of. Solaris kernel & GNU userland, no more overcrowded $PATHs... Sun, are you listening?
I like GNU-Userland on Solaris, but i don't need more, than the standard distribution contains.
The linux users i met seem to be a bit unflexible. It's like a seat-driver, who can't drive a mercedes, since the parking break is not operated by hand, but by the left foot.
Unflexible? Maybe, alltough I would rather call it laziness.
No, I honstely believe that most (not all) GNU tools are just more convenient then their Solaris counterparts. My two cents' worth.
They may be more covenient than the Solaris counterpart, but they do not conform to any known standard. This is the reason, why they are outside the PATH .... and they should stay there ....
linux ppl have become quite arrogant about their de-dacto standard. it's not that hard to learn the few differences and be happy os camper...
It should hopefully become a moot argument by the end of the year. A number of key Solaris shell utilities should be gaining the most common used features found in the GNU utilities (while keeping the unique Solaris bits such as ACL support).
