while I agree that linux-legibility is very important for opensolaris to gain ground its the features that sets it apart. dtrace & zfs and while I haven't fully grasped crossbow yet I might be another killer feature.
also sun should push their edge in identity management and integrate very fine grained control into opensolaris. this is an area that needs top-down design and that will grow big in the next years. so I'd say do both: lower the hurdles for linux ppl by making it familiar but keep innovating.
As a long-time Linux user (Ubuntu) I really like the "top" and "vi = vim" in the default path in the latest OpenSolaris. Little things like this are important to me - I really don't want to spend a day configuring OpenSolaris so my userland tools are in the "right" places. Long term, having a great package repository is going to increase adoption because most people aren't going to want to compile their own source. The latest IPS system is sweet. I'm excited and looking forward to next year's OpenSolaris laptop from Toshiba.
And hopefully, as you get more experienced, you will switch to the Solaris tools (such as prstat)
It certainly will attract Linux users :
