TPM wrote an article about some comments of Sun and Fujitsu executives and enriched it with some speculations - Sun and Fujitsu hint at Sparc futures:

As part of the launch of the Sparc T5440 midrange server this week in San Francisco, top brass from both Sun Microsystems and Fujitsu spent some time assuring customers that the companies' chip and systems partnership going strong and that both were working away on Sparc processors that would end up in future systems.

Without additional internal informations i would find it alerting, too.

Anyway ... i don´t trust such "An employee chooses to speak" ... independently of the company ... mostly they just have a revenge aganda. I just believe such comments, when i have similar informations from other independent sources.

By the way: When you know important code names, you see many code drops into Solaris due to new processors in the Caselog http://opensolaris.org/os/community/arc/caselog/2008/ ... you can´t do that without a working silicon.

Warum entwickelt Sun nicht einfach einen 8- oder 16-Sockel Niagara2 ? Vielleciht in Verbindung mit erweitertetn RAS-Möglichkeiten bei den Systemen? Warum stattdesen 2 neue Chips gleichzeitig entwickeln? Würden diese ähnlich skalieren, wie die jetztigen Systeme, wäre Sun auch im Hig-End Bereich ganz oben mit dabei.

Weil auch Niagara 2 keine Lösung für CPU- oder gar FPU-limitierte Probleme ist?

Hmmm ... nicht unbedingt ... es kommt darauf an, wie man die Probleme ausgestaltet. Hat man alten legacy code (ein thread) dann hast du recht. 1.4 Ghz ist da etwas hinderlich. Das gute ist: Da AMD und Intel in die Multicore-Entwicklung gefolgt sind, werden immer mehr Programme auf parallelisierung ausgerichtet. Ist halt so, das man selbst mit Intel/AMD mittlerweile ein ausgewachsenes MP-Problem hat

Und was die FPU angeht ... naja .... gerade FPU sollte auf einem T2 system kein problem mehr darstellen ...

Hmmm ... es muss da ja am ende auch ein balanciertes System rausfallen .... und einfach den crossbar vergroessern bringt die balance leicht durcheinander ...
