I'm trying to install Bitlbee server on an OpenSolaris box at Joyent. I get this error:
BitlBee configure ./configure: pkg-config: not found Cannot find glib2 development libraries, aborting. (Install libglib2-dev?) Can you tell me where you've put the GNU libraries? And how can I install any missing GNU libraries? Thanks.

1. The blog entry refers to the tools in the coreutils or fileutils part ....
2. /usr/sfw/lib ?
Compling bitlbee on OpenSolaris is a bit of a pain, I set up a wiki on how I did it.
http://watters.ws/wiki/index.php/Bitlbee_Install pkg-config is part of SUNWgnome-common-devel so you need to install that first.
Thx a lot for this blog entry! - It matches the coreutils and the fileutils very well, but I'm still missing some libs (there is no subdir lib), vim, bzip and ldap-tools. Configuring and compiling a special apache you may need some libs more.
You also can find more up-to-date GNU stuffs especially packaged for Solaris by the CSW project:

Actually, you had broken (I recall Roman Strobl use this phrase) OpenSolaris by including GNU tools in the PATH before old Solaris. So, if you take Solaris 7 script, which does not clearly define PATH or doesn't use absolute paths, it might not work.
For OpenSolaris (the ones with 200x.xx) the default isnīt the script-compatibiltiy, itīs led by easing the adoption for Linux-users. But as you stated, itīs just a matter of setting a different path.
Thanks a lot for this insight - most of it I discovered over the past months already, but the standards page is a really recommended read! It's not really easy to come from your everyday GNU/Linux world to a system which is much older and has a lot of 'legacy' build into it.
I'm only wondering how long this legacy will live in there. Will it outlive the A20-gate?

As long we keep he Binary Compatibility, we keep the legacy. This is the "price" you have to pay for this feature and while there a few applications still really using A20, i know several applications from projects, who need the conformance to old standards (some of them in the "You want to talk to the developer? Here the shovel ...")
