What's going on strikes me a lot about its similarity with the ongoing US presidential politics--no one cares about the truth any more. And blatantly, openly so.
The only way to fight back, I believe, is to make sure that our products are indeed substantially better, and go out of our way to recruit new users. Polls don't count, ballot box does. Same here. Don't be frustrated.
What you have noticed is the inherent laziness of the technical press. All to often, most of what you read in these magazines is the product of high priced PR firms.
Doens't look that bright for Linux...at least in Europe.
