Why can your customer just issue security stickers to go over the cameras? As for apple releasing a MBP without one, I hope that is never the case. We are FINALLY seeing cameras as standard components on the notebooks, let's not go backwards....
Hmmm ... do you really need a cam in the notebook? I didnīt used it so far ....
I talked about the sticker idea with the lobby personal, but i think this isnīt something they can decide ...
Two words: JB Weld.
At the datacenter I work at, we have a no-camera's policy, but they still issue us MacBook Pro's (and we use the camera's at work for videoconferencing). If we weren't allowed to have cameras on our laptops, I'd imagine we would just put some duct tape on the camera, as it matches the MacBook Pro body. One step further would be some JB Weld, as it would match too, and would be near impossible to remove enough to make the camera operable again. I for one agree that every laptop should have a camera, it's just too useful for videoconferencing, or just taking a random photo of a diagram to ship over.
Every Apple technician is able to remove the Macbook (+Pro) camera in about half an hour. The seriously challenging problem is to find one who is actually willing to do it.
I spent a few years at a client with a similar policy (automotive research), so I really understand your problem. Nevertheless, these policies aren't as much security theater as you think. A lot of people (I'm thinking about contract workers or truck drivers here) are indeed stupid enough to pull out their cameraphones, take photographs of secret prototypes and upload them to their silly blogs. So, to some extent, those strict rules are in place to protect them from themselves.
I thought about removing the camera, but the problem is how to close the hole again.
Regarding the security theathre: It may be different in car design, where even the look of a new car is a trade secret. But at this customer, the innovations are not that visible. I understand the camera mobile ban. Busomeone, who uses itīs computer to take photographs is more obvious than someone using the camera of itīs mobile.
The Macbooks have clear plastic in front of the camera module, so there actually is no hole. It's not exceptionally beautiful that way, but at least dust can't enter.
Hmmm ... wasnīt sure about that ... i think i will go to my prefered Apple technican after talking with that company if a removed cam is sufficient.
Dell just released the inspiron mini 9. $350 USD and NO camera!
Canīt use a Dell ... any competitive discussion in front of the customer agains Dell servers gets more difficult with Dell notebook
Deswegen habe ich auch HP. g Aber warte mal bis du mal gegen Apple Server argumentieren musst.
Aber welche Politik verfolgt SUN bei den Notebooks? SUN hat ja selber keine? Was nehmt ihr denn da? |
