Yet another linux filesystem

Sometimes i have the strong impression that Linux is the landfill for old filesystems. Linux is now the proud home of AdvFS. as HP contributed the old Tru64 Unix file system to Linux. But: Does Linux really need yet another filesystem? Beside all the other ones ?

Langsam übertreibts Dein Arbeitgeber ^^:

We've confirmed that Sun is looking to push the UltraSPARC Tx line to even greater heights with a 16-core, 16-thread per core eight-socket server. So, each socket is chewing through an insane 256 threads. And the eight-socket box will do 2,048 threads.

Bedenkt man mal das Alter und was es alles kann, dann ist es durchaus eines der besten Dateisysteme seiner Zeit. Es konnte damals Dinge, die erst heute bei anderen Dateisystemen als Durchbruch gefeiert werden.

Ich gehe aber mal davon aus, dass es unter Linux nur ein Nischendasein fristen wird. Es wird kaum ernsthaft zum Einsatz kommen.

Nun ja, eine Max volume size von 16TiB ist heute nichts mehr, was wirklich interessant ist. XFS konnte seit jeher deutlich mehr.

Man muss es ja nicht nutzen oder als Modul bauen etc. Jeder kann es ja aus seinem Kernel verbannen. Und wenn die Sun-Leute so sehr darum besorgt sind das nur 'alte' FS's im Linux-Kernel zu finden sind dann baut doch einfach ein paar neue ein, z.B. ZFS. Käme bestimmt gut an

Ich will auf was ganz anderes hinaus: Die Integration von AdvFS hat sicherlich nicht wenig arbeit gekostet. Vielleicht waere diese Arbeit bei den etablierten Filesystemen besser angelegt gewesen.

Beim lesen des Wikipedia Artikels zu AdvFS hatte ich ein DejaVu nach dem anderen. "Pooled Storage" ... Ja in ZFS muß das Austauschen von kleinen Blockdevices durch große erst noch eingebaut werden.
