Results for Q3FY2008

Sh.. we published the numbers for the third quarter:
Revenues for the third quarter of fiscal 2008 were $3.266 billion, a decrease of 0.5 percent as compared with $3.283 billion for the third quarter of fiscal 2007. Total gross margin as a percent of revenues was 44.9, an increase of 0.4 percentage points, as compared with the third quarter of fiscal 2007.

Net loss for the third quarter of fiscal 2008 on a GAAP basis was $34 million, or ($0.04) per share, as compared with net income of $67 million, or $0.07 per share, for the third quarter of fiscal 2007. In the third quarter of fiscal 2008, the company recorded a $52 million dollar tax provision, as compared to a tax benefit of $3 million in the third quarter of fiscal 2007. Net loss for the third quarter included charges related to the acquisition of MySQL, which reduced earnings per share by approximately $0.04.
Not unexpected when one of your most important markets has a slight economic problem.

just saw a headline that Sun is going to cut b/t 1,500 and 2,500 employees. this is really bad news.

Not unexpected when one of your most important markets has a slight economic problem...

No, other Tier1-companies are growing 10% to 15%. Sun relies still too much on banks in the US. The management missed to find new sectors where they can grow. For example the SMB market: Mr. Schwartz said in his blog: I don' t want to go to the dentist office. Others are making billions with companies like dentist offices...

At least it was unexpected by those, who are responsible for that numbers:
"Net loss for the third quarter included charges related to the acquisition of MySQL".

Sun pays a lot for free software!
Who explains this to the 2500 employees, who will be fired?

Good question who will be fired. But i guess that SUN will also kick out employees if he looses only 10€. You can buy something for 1billion dollars, but you cant hold your employees for 1 year to give a good feeling to all of them.

Well, it explains the "25% rebate" blow-out sales over the last weeks.
At least partly (who in his right mind will spend money now on a U20M2 when the new AMD Quadcores are (hopefully?) on their way?).

The people who doesn´t need 4 cores (for example an application that doesn´t scale or works almost completly in the GPU) in their workstation and want to safe a buck or two ...

OK, yes.
Comparing the midrange U20M2 vs. slightly more expensive U24 "Type 2" shows FX560 vs. NVS290.

Still, the Intel offering sounds much better - at least on paper.

But then, I'm rather saving for a Mac...
