Joerg,
I read the NetApp press release at the link you gave. Is the benchmark hostile just because it makes the CLARiiON look bad? Or did NetApp pay for a test that is technically accurate but practically useless? Tony Tancredi
Itīs hostile as NetApp published benchmarks from a vendor, who doesnīt publish benchmarks on itīs own. Although legal, this isnīt good style. Itīs the benchmarking variant of the hostile takeover ...
The problem: Can you trust the benchmarking company that they configure the product of the competitor in the most optimal way ?
I'm pretty confident I can trust the competitor to complain or even sue if the performance is significantly lower than an optimally configured system.
It also might prompt the competitor to publish benchmarks themselves.
When you write 'a vendor, who doesnīt publish benchmarks on itīs own', do you mean the independent testing company who NetApp paid (but does not name in the press release)? Or EMC (who NetApp certainly DOES name in the press release)?
EMC doesnīt publish certain benchmarks. You can think about this what you want, but itīs highly usual that a competitor publishes the numbers for this benchmark.
Say that EMC
1) Routinely paid a benchmarking company to run standard benchmarks on EMC products and 2) Published the results of those benchmarks Then I would consider it a good protocol for only EMC to release benchmark results for EMC products And say that NetApp 1) Paid a second benchmarking company to run run standard benchmarks on EMC products and 2) Published the results of those benchmarks Then I would consider it a breach of a good protocol for NetApp to release benchmark results for EMC products But if EMC does not routinely release the results of standard benchmarks on EMC products, then I would consider it a BAD protocol for only EMC to release benchmark results for EMC products. EMC can easily remedy the situation by releasing the results of benchmarks that it does not currently release. If NetApp's release of benchmark results for EMC products is effective for NetApp, then I agree with the Commenter named 'flawed' It also might prompt the competitor to publish benchmarks themselves If NetApp's release of benchmark results for EMC products is NOT effective for NetApp, then no harm done |
