I think the idea is that you let all your friends know where you are and where you will be so they can meet up with you. I don't hardly go anywhere and hardly know anyone who would randomly meet me anywhere, so I didn't find much use for it and had much the same concern you did.
I think plazes is a WEB 2.0 gadget like many others too. I use it, because it's nice to see who is near you. But you are right: I it also a kind of self observation -> (http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2006/10/tracking_hasan.html).
Yes, I'm thinking of installing wireless cameras in my home that automatically send pictures off to SmugMug whenever something moves and I'm not at home for that reason...
Been there, done that ... worked reasonably well, until Nabazarillion moved into my living room
