Obviously, Sun didn´t developed the branded Zones just for running Linux application. The scope of this technology is a little bit wider. Dan Price describes another usage of this technology in his blog - Project Etude, Revealed

In a nutshell, we've built a Solaris Container (or Zone) which is capable of running the Solaris 8 user environment. We have also created a capability to perform P2V (or Physical-to-Virtual) transformation of existing Solaris 8 systems into containers running on a Solaris 10 host
