I do agree with some parts of project indiana: Package management is kind of a mess on Solaris, especially when you try to customize an installation. Package dependencies can't be dealt with automatically.
But on the other way round the solaris installation is fine the way it is. Not every OS has a graphical installer nowadays, and Project Indiana will have to proove that the "alternative console based installer" is capable of handling the installation procedure as an admin expect. I have to admit: My collegues and me wondering wether or not this project will do Solaris any good. We're having ~450 Sun Servers onsite, and non of them needs a graphical installer. Most installations are done via jumpstart or wanboot anyway. A new package management wouldn't be that bad, but there are examples out there that tell you where things went bad: I stopped using Debian for example because the package maintainers tend to split packages, creating a large repository of packages. But this creates a mess of dependencies, too. I was unable to update an installation because of unresolvable dependencies. I hope that Suns decision turns out to be right. |
