HP and Novell try to position Transitive to obsolete old Sun Servers. I was asked about that toolset a few times, but the answer is relativly short.

Imagine the following call for such an environment at the Oracle support hotline. Must be going like this:
Oracle: Hello, Oracle Support, how can i help you?
Customer: Hello, i´m from ACME, i´m running Oracle 9i for Solaris on SPARC on Transitive on Suse Linux on VMware on x86. Hello? Hellllooo ?

And my answer to colleagues to counter such attempts is simple: Ask you customer to ask their software vendors to support such an huge stack. And ask them to add all support contracts and software licences to build such an stack and ask them to compare it with buying simply a new SPARC server.

Nur für Datenbanken wäre so ein Konstrukt Nonsense, denn ich habe noch keinen Datenbankinhalt gesehen der eine bestimmte Systemarchitektur voraussetzt. Sinn könnte es für alte Legacy-Software machen, für die es eh keinen Support mehr gibt. Davon gibt es zuhauf in Firmen. Die Idlen den Tag so vor sich hin und manchmal muss damit was gemacht werden. Dafür eine neue Hardware zu kaufen wäre betriebswirtschaftlicher Unsinn.

Nun, neue Hardware kaufen und dann auch noch lizenzen von Transitive und von VMware zu Kaufen, erscheint mir noch wesentlich weniger sinnvoll.

Wenn man keinen Support mehr hat, kann man genausogut das System mit neueren Solaris Releases laufen lassen ... dafür gibt es ja bekanntlich eine Binaerkompatibilitätsgarantie.
