The LPARS conundrum

Whenever you talk about technological advancements in operating systems in Solaris, you get the "But IBM has LPARS"-comment. Besides of having such a technology with LDOMS now and with XEN in the future, there is a major conundrum in this: How can a techology eating away up to 40% of your processor (IBM self-admitted in an withdrawn red book) have such a huge success as an emotional sales argument?

I would like to see that redbook...
People do not understand that LPARs are only good for HW consolidation.
What is needed is OS consolidation, as most of the work lies in managing operating systems. And there we have WPARs

IBMler spielen einfach schlechter Golf als ihre Kunden. Und als "Geschenk" für den Sieg, bekommen die Kunden IBM Kram verkauft oder einen IOD Deal verpasst.
Ich denke, man sollte keine schwarz-weiss-Malerei betreiben. Als Kunde hat man sowohl Anforderungen für Betriebssystem- als auch Hardware-Konsolidierung. Beides hat hat eine Existenzberechtigung.
Das Problem bei SUN ist, dass die Container/Zones-Technologie zwar sehr gut ist aber die Unterstützung seitens der Software-Industrie doch eher zögerlich kam. Dabei meine ich den produktiven Betrieb von geschäftsrelevanten Applikationen, wo eine Unterstützung von Seiten der grossen Hersteller wie Oracle, SAP und und Backup-Software erwartet wird.
Im Gegensatz zur Konkurrenz legt Sun aber bis jetzt auch keinen grossen Wert auf Usability. Ein Vollzeit-Solaris-Admin wird zwar über eine GUI lachen, aber es gibt auch noch andere Anwender für die sich Sun interessieren sollte.
Das Thema Hypervisor hat Sun ziemlich verschlafen und nun in Form von LDOMs realisiert und Xen-Support für X86 angekündigt. Ich bin gespannt, bis wann die Technik praxistauglich ist.
In Sachen Marketing kann Sun definitiv noch von der Konkurrenz IBM lernen. Technisch gibt es im Grossen und Ganzen keinen Grund zur Klage. Viel Hoffnung setze ich auf ZFS und NiagaraII/Rock.
