Okay, the headline is a little bit lurid, but Luminex shows a solution, that leverages Sun Server, Solaris and ZFSin the most unlikely environment: Mainframes ... Luminex announced a FICON-attachable virtual tape library based on X4500, Solaris , ZFS and the Channel Gateway software:

Luminex’s Channel Gateway VTS software installs directly to an off-the-shelve Thumper to transform it into a, FICON attached, 3490 virtual tape solution. All of this is delivered with no modification to the Thumper, no additional hardware and no costly control unit. The Luminex software turns the Thumper into the 3490 control unit.

"unlikely environment: Mainframes"?? Lass das mal keinen Mainframer hören.

Sieht aber extrem interessant aus und vielleicht eine nette Alternative / Ergänzung zur IBM VTS.

Ich finde das schon ziemlich "unlikely" in einem Mainframe-"ichkaufblau"-RZ irgendwo einen Sun Server angeschlossen zu sehen

Ansichtssache. Aber das gab es bis ca. 2003 noch bei einem größeren Versicherungskonzern zu sehen, direkt nebem Compaq ProLiants.

Heute is da alles schwarz... leider.

UP and running und jeder trauert ihnen hinterher. $X86-SERVER-VON-IBM (ich weiß nicht wie die aktuell heißen, xSeries, Series-X, X-Men-Series...) mag halt nicht jeder. Kann ich nach neun Monaten Serversupport dort verstehen...
