Nice idea, Joerg, but ...
You gain only if you use special software for HPC, or you need a compiling/rendering-farm or something like this. There is no gain for Joe Average's Applicatiopns, not sure if even SQL Query's could be executed in such an environment. People who can afford HPC tend more to buy another dedicated (bigger ?) HPC-Cluster than relay on workstation power.. Hey, could it be possible to use some of the workstation for an (joe average ) application cluster and replace the "rest -x" of the workstation by Thin-Clients like "Sun-Ray's" %-)
Most of this "beast-class" workstations are in the engineering departments of the companies. Many of those companies have classical HPC tasks. You are right, companies can afford a new HPC cluster. But sometimes you need more power really fast ...
