Am Wochenende in der alten Heimat gewesen. 5.7 Liter Durchschnittsverbrauch pro 100 km. Mit einem halben Tank 400 km gefahren. Normalerweise brauche ich nen ganzen Tank für diese Strecke. Nur 80 fahren zu dürfen spart schon was ... ich hoffe nur, die kommen nicht auf den Gedanken, den dreispurigen Ausbau der A1 dann auf 120 zu limitieren. Obwohl: Seit den tausenden von Meilen in Kalifornien ertrage ich das langsame Fahren auf Autobahnen besser ... nur das an der einen Seite der A1 nicht der Pazifik liegt ... nun ... das ist irgendwie schade.

I had an interesting discussion with my colleague Dirk this morning. This discussion got to the point, that a tool visualizing the dependencies of filesystems, snapshots and clones would be helpful for the work with ZFS. Well ... i used this evening and the warm weather on my balcony to develop a small script that feeds GraphViz with the nescessary data to create a graph of the dependencies. The script isn´t ready for a widespread release (volumes are missing) but I want to show you a first output.

One of the nice things you get with Infiband is the capability to do RDMA: You could copy from one system to another directly without involving the operating system. Thus this way of communication is a really efficient one compared to the overhead of using the TCP/IP stack.

With Build 116 we will see a SRP Target for the COMSTAR framework in Opensolaris. So you could use iSER as well as SRP to transmit and receive SCSI commands and the data via Infiniband and RDMA. Now there is the question, why you have two similar technologies in the kernel. Well ... not all operating system provide an initiator for both protocols. VMware just supports SRP but not iSER. In any case Infiniband starts to get an really interesting SAN media alternative or a valid media for single-fabric datacenters with the widespread support of Storage over IB protocols in various operating system.

In the case i would have to create a list of music that i´ve heard quite frequently around the millenium change, the album Vegas by The Crystal Method would be on this list for sure. Vegas was their debut album and it´s music ccompanied me for a quite a time and through many situations. Thus some important situations of that time are connected to this music and thus i really like this music.

Now it´s 2009 and Crystal Method published a new album. Divided By Night is their fourth album. I wasn´t really fond of their two other albums they´ve published in the mean time (Tweekend and Legion of Boom) but their actual album is much closer to Vegas, thus i´m really starting to like it. I don´t know if this music will be as important for me as Vegas but at least it´s very good music .

I would like to speak out some recommendations: Dirty Thirty, Smile? and Double Down Under. A rather untypical, nevertheless good track is Falling Hard.

Letztes mal wurde ja beschlossen, das nunmehr die HHOSUG monatlich stattfinden soll. Ich meinte ja schon damals, das das nicht funktioniert, wenn sich die Teilnehmer nicht auch mit einigen Vorträgen beteiligen. Für das dritte HHOSUG Meeting am 10.6.2009 suche ich immer noch Vortragende. Entweder für einen langen Vortrag oder einen 10 bis 15 Minuten dauernden Lightning Talk. Freiwillige vor! Das tut nicht weh und beissen wird auch keiner ....

There is an interesting feature in Solaris. It is called kssl. One component of this feature is obvious: SSL. So it has something to do with SSL encryption. As you may have already guessed, the k at the beginning stands for kernel. And kssl is exactly this: A proxy to do all the encryption stuff in a kernel module.

This feature is already four years old. I´ve reported about kssl back in December 2005 for the first time. After talking with a customer two days ago and looking at some new material about it, i thought it could not harm to write a new tutorial about this topic. So much appearances in such a small timeframe are a hint .

Shanti tested memcache a second time: With the same hardware but a different operating system:

The system running OpenSolaris and memcached 1.3.2 gave us a maximum throughput of 350K ops/sec as previously reported. The same system running RHEL5 (with kernel 2.6.29) and the same version of memcached resulted in 280K ops/sec. OpenSolaris outperforms Linux by 25% !

Hmm ... the Itanium franchise got another blow today: Intel announced today, that they delayed Tukwila. ETA now: First quarter of 2010. Their excuse:

Perhaps Intel should concentrate on their Xeon line and stop to develop a processor for HP
