Solaris RootserverMonday, April 27. 2009
Dauernden Support.

links for 2009-04-27Monday, April 27. 2009Recommended Listening: Pain - Psalms of ExtinctionSunday, April 26. 2009
Okay, this music is from Scandinavia and its good, too. Like the last album from Röyksopp (the last recommended listening). But the rest ist pretty much different. To be exact: it´s the diametral opposite. Much harder, much faster, much darker. My first recommended listening is a cover version. Play Dead is a great song, but as we all know: Bjork squeaks (I like her voice, other people search for earplugs). The version of Pain is great without losing much of the original. So you should give Play Dead a try. My next favourites are Walking on Glass and Psalms of Extinction. I won´t publish a screenshot of the cover. It´s horrible ... looks like Johnny Depp .. whould give you the wrong impression of the music.
TotalversagenSunday, April 26. 2009
Presentation for the Linuxtage 2009 in GrazSunday, April 26. 2009
I´ve made my talk at the Grazer Linuxtage yesterday. At first i have to thank the hosts of the Linuxtage. The invitation to this event gave me the opportunity to fly over the Alps. In just one word expressions: Impressive, great, WOW. That was really, really great. Thank you for the invitation, Michael.
The event was great, too. Well, i did the Moelli Solaris Show (a good friend of mine call this presentations "Shock and awe" presentations). 180 Slides in just 50 minutes (okay, i had 45 minutes, but i exceed my time budget a little bit). As i had to speed over some slides i want to give you the slides here: (click on image to view presentation) I think this presentation was a success. The room was almost full. Would say 30 people or so, but i´m bad at estimating numbers of peoples. I think the audience enjoyed it (comments are welcome). The bar of Zotter chocolate as a thankyou for the presentators was a great idea. Helped me through the day BTW: That is valid to you all ... when you need a decent speaker about Sun or Solaris at your open source event ... you can ask me PS: Constantin - I know that this is not the CI font in the preso, but i don´t like this cheap Helvetica ripoff called Arial. I´m a Futura fan. In my opinion the best font ever made.)

Strange thoughtsSunday, April 26. 2009
While looking out of the aircraft window yesterday evening i had some really strange thought: Is the idle thread of Google´s Android OS called "sheep" ?

Retrorocketing SolarisFriday, April 24. 2009
Dan Price did some interesting optimisations to one of the undervalued, but nevertheless important processes of an operating systems. He was able to yield vast speedups in halting the system. There are two methods: A violent shutdown (triggered by reboot, halt or poweroff) and a non-violent shutdown (it´s triggered by shutdown and stops the services in their order of dependency, just backwards). The later one was really slow: roundabout 45 seconds on his test system and many people think the system crashes at shutdown on their systems.
Well, Dan describes the optimizsation that brought down the time needed for a shutdown from 45 seconds to 7 seconds in "Speeding to a halt". Worth a read as this optimisation will find its way into OpenSolaris 2009.next. It´s a little bit older but with the surfacing of 110a in the OpenSolaris repository many people are really positively surprised about the changes to this undervalued part of Solaris.

We are able to talk with people on the other side of the planet. We are even able to talk with persons on the moon. But a train in middle of Germany is still as distant to the Internet as the deepest point of the seas (or the dark side of the moon): "No network" almost all the time.
LAP CastingFriday, April 24. 2009
200th flightFriday, April 24. 2009
Thanks to the internet service Flight Memory i have an exact overview about the number of flights i´ve done in the last years. This was easy for me, as my first time (first flight, not the other first time
So there wasn´t many flights to remember, when i started to enter my flights: So today i´ve done my 200th flight, 237.492 kilometers, 361:53 hours. As much as i like looking out of the window, i start to hate flying: It´s like driving bus (i assume, thats the reason for the name AirBUS) but with much more hassle to enter your bus. 179 of them were after the 1.1.2006 (between the first flight a.p. (after panic) and the next flight was over a half year. The most preferred aircraft: A320 I really like the A320. The ride in a A320 is mostly much smoother than the one in the 737 (my personal experience). I´m sure that this will change at the first time i fly with a A380. I must admit, that i prefer the Airbus aircrafts in any case. The journey in a A340 is much more enjoyable than the one in a 747 as well and i try to schedule my flights to use aircrafts from Airbus. The least liked aircraft: The Ryanair 737 The seating in them is an insult, when you don´t get an exit row seat. Dense pack. You could joke, that Ryanair has the quietest aeroplanes: Because yor knees cover your ears. I don´t like the 737 all together, but that was the the most anoying experience. But what can you expect, when you fly from Bremen to London-Stansted with 4 persons for just 32 Euro The most prefered airports: HAM and ZRH Arriving - HAM ... because you are at home soon. Departing - well ... i really like the ZRH airport. Relative short distances there. One disadvantage: This Airport needs a Starbucks badly.Despite being twice at the airport of Zuerich, i still doesn´t have the Zuerich Starbucks mug. The least liked airport: DRS and MUC But not because of the airport. I virtually waited days on this airport. From HAM to DRS - either much to early or to late. From DRS to HAM - either to early for the normal duration of the meetings meeting or much later. So i have a very special relationship to this airport. I can´t see the cookies in the FTL lounge anymore ... My hate for MUC can be explained with a simple fact. It´s somewhere in nowhere. It´s not at the butt of the world, but you can see it from there. One hour from the Sun office to the airport is a joke and the connections at Leuchtenburg Ring are a joke (you have to wait at least 10 minutes at any time) The most enjoyed experience February 2001. Flight back from Boston to Amsterdam in a Northwestern 757 (think so ... not sure). After sorting out (took the first half hour of the flight) that we were both from Germany, so we doesn´t need to speak english, i had a really interesting 6 hour flight with a young mother with her baby. She visited her parents in Germany with her newborn child (a few month or so) , but wasn´t able to do this with her husband (a M.D. as far as i remember). Had a really long and enjoyable discussion about immigration to the US, jobs, life and all the rest. After a while the flight attendants thought, it were my wife and my baby. I didn´t corrected the error, because they found the baby extra-cute and so they were extra friendly to me and the mother of the baby. The ways divided at Amsterdam Schipol. Perhaps a good example for portioned friends as the unnamed narrator in Fight Club calls them. You meet someone by the infinite wisdom of the airline reservation computer, you share a part of way with this person, and then you never meet again. The most annoying experiences Okay ... the Top Ten of aviation annoyances ... 10. Airport waiting areas. Normally it would place this in the Top 3 ... but as i like to observe the interactions of people and the behaviour of people in such areas like airports or train stations) i observed several sad, funny or interesting situations. Sometimes that´s worth the waiting in the airport. 9. People reading newspaper without a proper folding technique to stay in their own seat area. Especially when they read the BILD, the worst newspaper available in Germany. 8. The low "Exit" sign in some regional aircraft. "The last thing before loosing his consciousness was the exit sign" 7. People entering the aircraft while "Just the rows 32-22" and taking place in row 10 and needing "hours" to seat. 6. Incompetent ground personal ... like this woman at McCarran Airport in 2007. Her plan for my schedule would have led to visiting the check-in counter at every leg of my journey back to Berlin) 5. Airline meals (the United airline meals would justify the first rank on this list, the meals in Swiss Business class were really acceptable) 4. The flight back from New York last year (will not tell reasons) 3. Arrogant stewardesses. I know ... they are important for flight safety, but their daytime job is to work as better educated waiters and waitresses. I don´t want to be handled as a life-unworthy existence. But: I don´t like passengers as well, who aren´t able to honour the service of the attendants and don´t behave with respect for them. 2. The incapability of stewardesses not to bump with butt or trolley into my shoulder or knee. 1. Economy Class Seating - hell on earth. links for 2009-04-23Thursday, April 23. 2009

Some personal thoughts about Oracle, Sun and Suns hardware businessThursday, April 23. 2009
There are so many statements in the Internet, that Oracle will kill of Suns hardware business when the deal is finally closed. Well ... that´s really interesting, because in the official presentation of Sun there were several statements, that they want to provider solutions from app to disk. They talked about investment protection of SPARC customers. I assume that many from this "experts" and "analysts" doesn´t took the time to analyse the data available to the public before they started to the race "Who predicts a higher reduction in force?"
It´s just an educated guess, but i even think (and thats a personal opinion just based on the available material) that nothing will change in regard of the Hardware business of Sun. When a combined Oracle/Sun wants to be competitive you have to produce your components at a certain price point, for a competive price point you need volume. And as large as the Oracle DB market is, i don´t think it´s huge enough to provide volume. Assuming that Oracle will kill of Sun HW or just selling it with Oracle would be equal to an IBM just selling their xSeries or pSeries system to Websphere and DB2 customers. About ZFS and mysqlThursday, April 23. 2009
Allan Packer and Neelakanth Nadgir published their Mysqlconf presentation about ZFS and mysql optimisation. The interesting stuff for people already aware of the basic advantages and concepts of ZFS starts at page 13. Worth a read.
Mysql 5.4 with DTrace enabled by defaultWednesday, April 22. 2009
Besides the tuning for configurations with a higher amount of procs, there is another important "new" feature in Mysql 5.4: Dtrace providers are now enabled in mysql by default in this version (albeit there were enabled in certain pre-compiled binary packages). You can use it on Solaris, Opensolaris as well as MacOS X and FreeBSD. Furthermore there is an interesting Blueprint about the usage of DTrace in conjunction of Mysql at wikis.sun.com.
