Apple uses Sun technology for Leopard

After the excellent fscklog directed me to the preview pages for Leopard I was somewhat stunned, when i´ve read the Apple website regarding Leopard a.k.a 10.5. Apple integrates a cornerstone of Solaris 10 into it´s new operating system. DTrace made it into my favorite desktop operating system:

And Time Machine is the cooolest interface to snapshots ever. Something tells me, there is another component of Solaris in Leopard. Do you remember the the rumors about ZFS in Mac OS. I have the feeling in the gut that the Time Machines leverages ZFS snapshots.

Time Machine per ZFS?

Habe ich auch zuerst gedacht, aber zum einen wäre das etwas zu schnell, wenn man den Entwicklungsvorlauf bedenkt.

Zum anderen:
"Backup Time: Time Machine will back up every night at midnight, unless you select a different time from this menu."

Das klingt für mich eher nicht nach ZFS, sondern nach einem relativ schnöden inkrementellen Backup, das ein richtig tolles Interface verpaßt bekommen hat.

so sieht's aus, also immer huebsch das powerbook mit dem festplatten-subsystem connecten, bevor man schlafen geht.

die preview suggerierte, dass die backups dateibezogen on the fly passieren, vor dem loeschen, vor dem veraendern von dateien.

na ja, bis januar ist noch etwas zeit...

Nunja, eigentlich nicht wirklich zu schnell. Zum einen weiss man nicht wirklich, wann Apple damit angefangen hat. Der Source ist ja nun schon geraume Zeit bekannt. Zweitens ist ZFS ein sehr schlankes System, wenn man dann noch davon ausgeht, das auch MacOS etwas wie wie VFS hat, dann steht dem nix gegenueber auch schnell geportet zu werden. Ich glaube irgendwie nicht an ein inkrementelles Update, das wuerde viel zu viel Storage verbrauchen, und waere zu langsam. Auch wenn vielleicht nicht die momentane Version unter ZFS laeuft, ich habe es irgendwie im Blut, das die entgültige Version so arbeiten wird.

Zumindest ist Tim Foster in seinem Weblog dem Interface, das Apple gewaehlt zu haben scheint, recht nahe gekommen...

Ich gehe davon aus, dass Apple noch kein ZFS einsetzt, der Wunsch nach einer separaten Harddisk fuer die Backup waere doch eine etwas "andere" Form des COW. Indem sie die Integration ins User Interface bereits schaffen, ist die Huerde ZFS zu integrieren jedoch deutlich gesunken. Ich bin gespannt wann es (wohl eher als alternatives Filesystem) kommt.

ceterum censeo: Ich nehme es Apple dennoch uebel, dass sie auf X86 migriert sind. Ich moechte OpenFirmware zurueck!
