Hi Jörg,
we met at the CeBit this year. My question to you is: Did you ever get in contact with Dell services as a customer? Did you ever ask them for their expertise and support? What is your personal background to claim things like "The only reason Dell can get away without generating confidence..." besides being a Sun employee? Kind regards Hajo Kessener
I was in contact (mostly indirect) with Dell Services. But this is not the point i wanted to state.
Everybody knows the limitation of x86. Most of the x86-System are selled like "okay, we need some more webservers" and when they use x86 it´s like the several times before. There is an already existent confidence. Many people have Intel at home and have the feeling that "Intel" is really fast. So there is no need to build up confidence. You can directly start to design the solution. When you want to sell UltraSPARC T1, you have to explain. You have to explain, why it´s better than a XEON or Opteron. And Rock will need explanation, too. Not because there are more complex, but they are at the start of their lifecycle. The mistake the analysts make: You can´t compare the cost structure of two companies like Sun and Dell. Besides of delivering electronics they are too different.
Hi Jörg,
customer satisfaction is what counts in the end. This can not be achieved by decrying others and wearing Sun-glasses. Anyway, I like both worlds and hope with you that these new boxes (and their successors) will do it in the long run. Kind regards Hajo Kessener
Hello Hajo,
i´m not decrying Dell, thats not the point i want to make. I have only a problem with analysts who put Sun and Dell in the same category of tech companies. You have to Regards Joerg PS: I hope you can aggree to the fact that selling the first T2000 is a harder sell than selling the 20th Poweredge, even when the T2000 is much better than the Poweredge for a certain task.
Hi Jörg,
sorry, my last comment was a bit declamatory and didn't really bring it to the point. Of course, I've got you right from the beginning and do understand your point of view. I just felt uncomfortable with your approach of presenting Dell doing it the cheap and easy way, selling their potatoes without having to generate confidence, and Sun bearing the burden of selling diamonds that are, however, non-self-explanatory. To me this is first of all not a Dell vs. Sun game but rather an x86 vs. Sparc one. If you think of x86 you could as well condemn IBM, HP or FSC for selling potatoes. And there is no doubt that, in the past few years and for a lot of applications, x86 boxes many times outperformed Sparc boxes for a fraction of the price. I guess this is why Sun also sells Opterons meanwhile. And I'm sure that this is why you are so excited now about the T1000/2000. What I like very much about Sun is their rock solid build quality and the yet enjoyable aura of hardware that is just beautifully designed, straight from the inner to the outer, technically and aesthetically. And same as you I don't like analysts that will not take care of my feelings. Kind regards Hajo Kessener PS: I do agree. And btw: Sun must be proud of you for being such a strong protagonist |
